It's a shame that many yanks just don't get this sort of thing. It's much more common in Britain for this sort of thing, although you still have people who vote on personality or tradition.
To the depressed yank a few posts below me: You can't complain, because you don't vote. Voting gives you a right to complain, otherwise you're just being a moron.

I'll give you a 10 just for making people getting angry and offended - cause that is what it's about - the only thing that is wrong with what you call "debate" is that nobody respects one another and has little focus on what it means to come up with good arguments.
