Pretty good first!
You have the button press and animation down pat, now you need to see about adding effects. A little eerie background music perhaps, and of course shotgun blast noise whenever hit left button. Then you can think about adding blood splats for hits with possibly "ergh" sounds when those zombies get it! Later on you can then get to having lives (hearts) or healing and such. Well that should keep you busy for your next semester at least (hah).

It's a pretty decent game, everything works and the speed increases over time. It isn't anything earth-shatteringly new, but it's a good start. -Keep at it.
