At the time of writing that joke, I was still not sure that Bungie hadn't in fact put that in the game, so I corpse-humped like mad throughout the campaign!

Nope, the Iron Skull is located on the high ledge behind Sgt. Johnson's cell at the end of the Sierra 117 level.
The one you're talking about (The IWHBYD skull, probably stands for I Would Have Been Your Daddy) IS actually hard to get. Infact, it's pretty near impossible if you don't look it up on the internet first. Apparently it took a whole community of halo fans looking all over the game, some people looking at Halo 3's code to give them clues as to where it might be, a clue from Bungie telling them what level it was in, and sheer luck + time to figure out what needed to be done.
