the idea with the graphics was simplicity. i did experiment a lot with different graphical styles and ideas and found that this worked the best. with more complex things going on on-screen it was unclear for people playing what they had to do. the idea here was a simple, clearly laid out challenge which could be met by anyone.
the stick character that you don't like was inspired by the main character of Rez (a dreamcast/ps2 game) and was used because he is easily animatable, obscure, arty and overall a bit cool. i was never going to use a piece of fruit with a clock for a face for this game.
