I was only 2 when the game came out, but this game still marked my childhood. Feels great to finally revisit it after all these years.

Protip: focus on getting survivors the first few days. Skimp on repairs as it's a very inefficient use of time when you're alone. Once you get the revolver on night 3, search for weapons until you get the UMP, which will have you set for a while.
Keep finding survivors until you get the shotgun on night 5. After that, just balance your time between searching for weapons and survivors, and you'll be right as rain.
Or you could cheese the game by using the Hunting Rifle + Chainsaw combo and staying on max survivors, which gives you permanent access to Hunting Rifle Guy. I won't judge. It's your playthrough.
(Note: the soldier zombies that you encounter starting from night 17 don't give you the M4. Not sure if it's a bug or something.)
