Reviews for "Osiris II"

Good but boring

not really my thing but may appeal to other people, got bored with it really quick. ill probly end up trying agen another day. alot of work has gone into it and it shows :)

ChromeShark responds:

That's no problem, I know it wont appeal to everyone. I'm pleased you can see that a lot of work went into it.

bah

This game is not uniformly slow or fast. As you said in an earlier review, parts of it are running as fast as Flash can handle. Well, guess what... my computer can handle a lot, with the result that the whole thing is much too fast. You can't barely see where you're going before you get there. More on that, the vertical scrolling is poor--you can't see below you. The horizontal scrolling has the opposite problem, that it follows you around constantly, so that the screen never holds still. You should have a threshold (like other scrolling games do) so that if you move around in the center of the screen, it doesn't scroll horizontally. Also I dislike the feel of the game. My character does not seem fully connected to the ground; she's often just above or below the floor instead of directly on it, and there's no sound for when she plants her feet on a platform. Her run animation is very sloppy, so she looks like she's skating. You should make it so that if one foot touches the ground, it stays in the same place until it leaves the ground, instead of sliding forward. Her roll animation is physically impossible, as her head apparently passes through the floor. When you do a roll, it's your BACK that touches the ground, not your head. Her flips in midair are also not realistic--you have to tuck your arms and legs in. Also her jumps do not seem physically realistic--she bounces up and down much too quickly and her speed does not decrease as she gains altitude, she just reverses direction suddenly at the top of her jump.

A lot of work went into this, but these flaws hurt the gameplay.

ChromeShark responds:

It's funny that some people saw its all much too slow and some say it's too fast, it's hard to please everyone. But I really appreciate your comments, most people aren't specific enough to really help, but I will try and fix these things you mention for chapter III. Things like a landing sound, I didn't think of. The vertical scrolling is a technical problem that I will work on trying to make better. The rest of the things you mention are mostly just a case of putting a bit more time into the animations. Thanks a lot for your review.

Didn't enjoy it...

Well, to be honest, I got very little enjoyment out of this game. The character art/animations was horrible, and the background art was...tolerable.

In my opinion, the game moved way too slowly. The bullets were slow, the movement was slow, the animation was slow -- everything was so damn slow.

Plus, it did nothing new or innovative. There's a million games like this one, and I'm getting sick of it.

Although I apparently didn't like the game, you did do a decent job with the presentation. At least the instructions were easy to follow, and the menus were pretty cool.

Other than that, this is just plain boring.

ChromeShark responds:

I can't argue with what you enjoy and don't, I don't personally feel that game is slow in most areas, some of the areas you mention were running as fast as Flash could handle.

I don't really think there are a million games like this, at least not on Newgrounds. Although it is what I'd call a standard platformer, I feel that this does a few things that most don't.

I'm glad you liked the menus at least.

Jaw Droppingly great game.

I can't stress enough how much you need to play this game. With so many crappy unfun games on newgrounds, this is the game ull be playing for a long time. The objective is simple, go threw levels with ur selection of guns and kill a bunch of monsters. Each level has a great design. Unlike some games of this type, each level features platforming elements too. There are also many traps and puzzles to work your way around. The control scheme is flawless. Control your characters direction with the arrow keys, plus u can roll back and forth and do back and front flips as well, to get past the traps. You can have up to five different guns on you at one time, so you can select one by simply pressing 1-5 on your keyboard, selecting which gun you want. Aiming is simply controled by your mouse on the screen. There are 3 different story lines to follow. One taking place in Egypt, one taking place near Mt. Everest, and the other one in India. Each level on has its own substory and level design. Plus the three different main storie's levels look different than the other ones. You will also be able to purchase and unlock new guns, upgrades, and cloths for your character. The game also features extras like concept art and brainstorming. But what really surprised me was the level design feature. Tell me, how many games on newgrounds let you create a level where you set up traps and monsters and then play in it. Not alot. In fact 1 or 2. Its simply a drag and drop kinda thing. But it still works very well. It is a little lagging and you might think i'm overreacting when you play the game (I don't) but it's just the amount of effort they put into this game makes me jump for freakin joy. I'm usually the type of game reveiwer who writes one sentance and curses alot, but I just can't help writing a long ass reveiw for this game. PLAY THIS SHIT!!!!!

ChromeShark responds:

Thanks for your great review. The level creator was mostly made so that I could personally create levels easily, allowing me to create a large adventure mode with ease. Having it as an extra to the game was just a bonus. I'm pleased that you feel a lot of effort was put into this, as I did put in 200% for this, but I'm hoping that many elements can be used in further sequels so the effort wasn't wasted. I'm pretty excited about Osiris III as it will be a big change, but I hope you like it as much. Thanks a lot.
