Reviews for "The Halloween Hunt"

Good, but yea..

I liked the game play very nice but I find things with it that strike me a bit wrong with the game.

I don't know if it's a problem with my browser or the general Macintosh system but as it was sad before the menu buttons have no labeling. So when I thought I was saving I really wasn't, which ended up pissing me off cuz I wanted to quit for a little while then pick up where I left off. Secondly, the damn total random thing about the coins you earn and stuff.. that got really annoying. I mean I'm going through the game and lets say I'm trying to get overdrive and I need 5000 coins but I only have like 50 some. I fight one monster get 348 coins, the next 3 that I face I only get 24 from. That should be done away with and changed.

Thirdly, it was very easy to go through most of the game. You could go through the whole game as level 1 (I think) and not have any restrictions and I don't know that I could change my weapon not sure since um..... the menu didn't work right. Lastly, you kept the theme of the game together. I commend you on that, and yea I agree "father" looked kinda dull, and he could do way too much damage. I mean you could have lets say 700 some health left and he does one move and you end up with like -14 or something.. what's up with that? when I used weaker attacks so did he then I went to end it quick with the overdrive attack he'd do a big move and game over. Yes, I followed the tips.. they helped kinda. Also attacks of everything.. redudent, very redudent. The teddy bear and ghost, slash attacks. Blobs wobble over and streach to hurt you. The wasp fly over move a little and do an attack. Another thing combo, haunted, max, limit, and overdrive attacks all the same animation just different ammounts of dammage (same goes with revive). also concentrate and defend were same. All this needs is a little tweeking and it could easily be one of the tops games around here. I decided to be nice though and give you an E for effort since there are no visible bugs in the game, and everything ran smoothly even on my slow computer.

So, to cap it off just work on the game a little bit (put in some different animations for attacks and stuff) and get rid of the random won coin thing (do it based on your stats like you do the attacks). Also, please please please work on the menu screen and make it compatible with all browsers (may take you a while), or Mac and PC alike (I know it's flash but a little java code in it to make the Mac system work with it). It got me hooked though I wanted to see the end but I wanted to test the save thing. purpously died. Went to main menu and all the slots were empty.. so I was pissed cuz all my (two maybe three) hours straight of playing this game, due mostly to the damn random coin thing, were lost. Um though I haven't tested this try going through the whole game as level one you might not get as many coins but trust me staying a lower level will make the game much much easier (I was level three had all the stuff unlocked and was beating the second and third dragons in like two hits).

P.S. To those people who can't figure out how to move form place to place walk to the arch things on the screen. Those are doorways and gates! (They get clearer the more you play the game).

kinda got boreing

it got boreing fast story lines interresting tho

Pretty good, but not polished.

This game is complex enough to require some cognitive work, but it is still simple enough to be easy to play. I also like the battle graphics. They look pretty nice and the animation is smooth, even if the enemies are just still images that move around.

I do have several problems with this game and I don't mean these in a cynical way, so please bear with me.

It's dull. Seriously, the game is not very fun and lacks variety. For one thing there's only a handful of different enemies, and leveling up does not produce new ones to fight. The enemies all seem to be exactly the same in terms of their fighting ability, health, and treasure and basically just have different images and attack/death animations. I also have no idea what the enemy health is while battling, so I have no idea if I should escape from battle or not which makes that option near useless. It's easier to just fight on and potentially die and load a saved game.

Speaking of, I don't understand the requirement of being on a save point. I assume they exist to make your job as a programmer easier when loading a game. As a player, however, they really make no sense. Not only that, I can just stand on a save point and walk into a wall to produce the random encounters, so wandering around the maps is a waste of time once I've gotten all the loot.

The weapons seem broken. I can "equip" weapons but I have no way of telling if I actually equiped one. Neither my character's weapon graphic nor the damage I deal changes, so what's the point there? Is there a glitch or something?

Leveling up is more detrimental than helpful, since for some unexplained and confusing reason, all of the (same exact) creatures get tougher as well. Leveling up just makes it take longer to kill the same creatures so I can see no benefit there. Usually leveling up makes killing the same creatures easier. Yes, it can be cheaper to level up than buy more stats, but at the cost of taking far longer to tediously kill enemies enough enemies to get the costly upgrades is not worth it. The stats system seems unbalanced to me.

Being able to see skills in the "Learned Skills" section during a battle when I haven't yet bought them makes no sense. It would also be very handy to know how much energy they take before I bother to buy them i nthe first place so I'll know if I ned to up my mana skill or not just to use them.

Okay okay. I could go on with some other aspects that I think need improvement, but I do not want to turn this into a rant. I hope my observations help. I will likely continue to play until I beat the game., so you've at least hooked me to some extent. :-)

Very nicely done game

I played this until I finished it. Which meant discovering that the experience/level-up system was similar to Final Fantasy VIII's, and the painful truth of having to restart because I was too powerful, and thus, my enemies were too powerful (No Lion Heart/Aura Stone combo to save me in this game). Your tips are kinda mean to the average player, in a good kind of way, but if a player ever reaches battle level 7 with 17's in each attribute with every technique, they will not ever succeed against the final boss, and popping 22k for the next upgrade in any field isn't my idea of a good time.

For you new guys out there: Vitality is BAD. VEEEERY bad. It boosts the life of your enemies, and it makes everything take longer to kill, including bosses. Raising your battle level once is fine. Increasing it past that point can heavily complicate things for you, since that levels up all the enemies in all of their statistical fields. When you begin the game, crank your encounter rate to maximum, and focus on getting the Haunted technique. Next, focus strictly on Strength and Magic, since the two influence the strength of all learned techniques. Boost your battle level once, and then focus on mana until you have exactly 200. after this point, focus on saving up for the ultimate attack.

I was able to 1-Hit kill pops in the last battle doing this... well, that's where the weird part comes in. I saved my data to the fifth file, and my save got screwy, shooting me from Act I to Act III. Now, I have my storage capacity for my flash to unlimited, so I don't know what happened. I saved the jumped data, and reloaded the original file, and found the save to be completely screwed. You might want to check your file save code for errors on this one. It's not pertinent, really, but just know that the fifth save is all bugged up.

Again, suave game, I enjoyed it a lot and keep up the good work.

First, I do have to give you credit for the smooth graphics. They are excellently done. But there's more to a game than graphics. There's gameplay.

Besides the bosses, there are only about 5 enemies that you can fight. These enemies get stronger as time passes, but it's still the same 5 over and over again. A different level should have different enemies. It is very boring. AS an earlier reviewer said, you have to have amazing patience to think this game is fun.

Similarly, there aren't enough attacks. The gameplay is 1 dimensional. You basically have a choice between overdrive, concentrate, and recover, and you know you have to do concentrate first, and you know recover is usually useless against bosses, so there's hardly any choice at all.

The boss fights come down to a coin toss. You don't know if they are going to do a 300 damage attack or a 1400 damage attack. Most of the game is just fighting endless monsters (and always the same 5 monsters) training to try to fight a boss. There's no adventure, just endless battles. And the last boss is ridiculous. I spent an hour training to fight him, and eventually I got a level 7 character with all stats at least 13. Then I fought the last boss over and over again until I lucked out and got a concentrate followed by four overdrives, a total of about 17200 damage, without dying myself. And guess what? HE DIDN'T DIE. So should I spend another half an hour trying to train more? Should I spend another half an hour fighting him over and over again until I (maybe) get lucky and last until I can get a concentrate and 5 overdrives in for 21500 damage? Will he die even if I do? Sadly this game is just not fun enough for me to bother to find out.

Smooth interface and graphics, but not dazzling enough to conceal the very poor gameplay.
