Reviews for "Racing Through Eternity"

holy mother of mercy

it seems that yuve put a lot into this song. and, you know what? you SUCCEEDED! i like how its good and evil at the same time. its good to have artists like you on this server. thanks for this.

Step responds:

Haha thanks a bunch for the review! Glad you like the song, and thanks for favving me xP.

Thanks again :D.

Its o.k...

I think you may have put a little too much into this if people are giving some long ass reviews. I think theres too much backround noise, other then that its o.k.

Step responds:

Yeah true, I definitely put a lot into this, but I gave it my all :).

Thanks for the review!

Oh my god....

Dude, this wins the internet!!!

I don't think I can really call this a real review seeing as I have no experience in the art of making professional sounding music to tell you what you might need to hear, So instead let me tell you a story.

Many months ago I forgot my password for my account here on newgrounds. And since I'm a super lazy person, I've been going around the audio portal listening to songs without my account, and seeing if I can put them in my game I'm making for a project at my school. SO I've been roaming around and trying to pick rarely heard, totally different, electronic type songs to put in my game. And all the while I was looking I was debating with myself on whether or not I should put my game up here on newgrounds. So I found a couple songs that nobody's heard before and I put them in my game. However then I came to the level in my game where you have to defeat the boss in a race. And after every song I've heard before yours I just didn't think they were "racing-ful" enough.

So then I see your song in the results and honestly I thought that this was gonna be another song with an exciting mysterious name just to grab peoples attention, so they can listen to it and whatnot. But I plugged in my headphones and clicked on it anyway.

And man......I WAS TOTALLY BLOWN THE FAWK AWAY.

I just love this song!!! I adore the piano part, and the melody, and those cymbal like crashes in some parts. I mean seriously I just think it was that awesome and pwnageful!!!

I haven't heard your song Speeding Through Infinity, though I'm sure that this is waaaaaaaaay better.

Any song that can make me go back through all my 2000+ emails to find the email from newgrounds that has my password enclosed, come back here to newgrounds, log in, type up a comment this long (even though I have no music making experience AT ALL), give it 10 stars, save it into my favorites, vote a 5 on it, download it in order to put it into my first game I've ever created for my school prgramming project that counts for a major part of my whole grade in that class for the final quarter, AND help me decide that I WILL upload my game onto newgrounds when I finally finish, just to give official credit to all these awesome songs I've used, AND all the while not caring how n00by or how much of a suck-up I probably sound typing this up right now, or how this could be marked as a useless review,

Is a song of supreme awesomeness that deserves to be recognized as such.

Step responds:

W-O-W.

I've never seen such an awesome and supportive review in my life O.O... I seriously don't think there's any possible way to thank you enough... I mean, I'm no professional producer, far from it, and getting a review as supportive as this is quite a big achievement for me. Thanks a LOT :D.

"I don't think I can really call this a real review seeing as I have no experience in the art of making professional sounding music to tell you what you might need to hear."

Firstly, I really don't mind at all if you have musical experience or not. I'm actually really surprised you actually made a review this big without any musical experience, so thanks for that.

"However then I came to the level in my game where you have to defeat the boss in a race. And after every song I've heard before yours I just didn't think they were "racing-ful" enough."

This song wasn't actually intended to be race-like. I named the first one 'Speeding Through Infinity' since after finishing it (it was my first Trance song) I thought it reminded me of Space, although Space seems a bit like a lame word to use in a title, so I decided to try out Infinity.

I liked the sound of it, but the title 'Infinity' was too clich and overused, so I added Speeding Through Infinity. Then, for this song, I just found a synonym for 'Speeding' and 'Infinity' and replaced the words :P. Technically, I only thought of 'Speeding' (which led me to think of 'Racing') because I didn't want the title to be 'Infinity' on its own xD. Although I'm glad it sounds 'racey' enough, that's for sure :P.

"I just love this song!!! I adore the piano part, and the melody, and those cymbal like crashes in some parts. I mean seriously I just think it was that awesome and pwnageful!!!"

Glad you like the song :). The piano part was something I added because I enjoy adding piano to my trance songs, and the melody was me messing around with an arp and thinking 'Oh hey, this sounds cool'. The things which are similar to cymbal crashes are probably the sweeps I added. Those are filtered white noise :D.

"I haven't heard your song Speeding Through Infinity, though I'm sure that this is waaaaaaaaay better."

Yeah, you're right :P. Speeding Through Infinity sounds really bad now that I look back to it, although I don't think I achieved as much of a good atmosphere in the intro in this one as I did in that one. Probably because I used a slightly detuned dance-like saw in the intro which doesn't provide such a good atmosphere, and there I used a cross between a multisaw and a square wave which sounds a bit deeper. Alright you probably have no idea what I'm talking about so I'll stop right about now...

Although yeah, I think this one's way better.

I'm feeling sorry because I made you do all that, and amazed that my song had such an impact O.O. Thanks, I suppose :D.

Well, thanks for the really epic review. Out of the 100's of reviews I received, this is probably my favourite from them all. Yeah, now I'm probably sounding like a suck-up too, but I mean it xD. THANKS FOR THE REVIEW!

Thanks for the invite ;)

Well you asked for it, so lets see, I had to get back to your old track to dig it all up but I am all back. Well the first thing which catch my ear is that you seriously improved your sound, it is nicely polished.
Nice piano and good worked out melo´s.
I think that the style of the track itself would fit a game like FZero or something.
Keep up the creativity.

And for the 0´ers... well... sadly we got to life with it... at least you scored another 5 ;0.

Step responds:

Hey man, thanks a LOT for reviewing this :D. Even though I made this like a month and a half ago, so far I haven't made a better song (although I think I came close with Against the Clock). I'm happy you actually went to check out the old track too to compare :D.

Yeah, everyone seems to like the piano :P. Except a friend of mine at school, who loved everything BUT the piano. Hm, yeah, this does have a similar style to the FZero songs...

Yep, 0-bombers suck, although as you said, we'll have to put up with it. Really glad you liked this, and thanks for the review!

Nice

Please excuse that my review isn't structured all that well. I did listen through it a few times, then I skipped through it to different parts to find out stuff that I would point out in my review. Hence;

Throughout the song I'm noticing that the high end is a bit extreme. It's got that noisy quality that exhausts the ears after a while, usually resulting from detuned saws and noise sweeps with lots of reverb. For example, the thing at 1:40 should have a bit more tonality in my opinion, now it's mostly a harsh sweeping noise. I'm thinking maybe it would be a good idea to tone down the super-high frequencies and kick the 6-9khz range up a bit to make it a bit more pleasant while keeping that hi-fi sound.

Dude! I love that mood change at 1:35 SO MUCH! The square synth thingy introduced the calmer part perfectly. There was a similar transition previously, but now it stands out a lot since the same instrument wasn't used previously in this part. Just excellent.

I like the more laidback feel about halfway in the song when you switch to half time and then build up to the standard part again. Really gives the whole piece that kind of "epic" feel after a full listen. I could see even more processing (mostly reverb) on that specific part, to make it stand out a bit. I dunno. It's fiine.

There are some gems in this piece that i only noticed when cranking up the volume quite a bit. The hi-passed little buildup around 1:47 for example, there's this kind of resonant tone hidden deep inside the noise. A perfect example of juicy synth bits that I'd like to hear more of. Another thing I only noticed when I listened to it quite loudly is the quite extensive reverb on the low end. I notice you used some of those super-processed kicks (VEC I assume?) from 1:00. This is something you should be very careful about using for anything but emphasis (kinda like you'd use a crash cymbal), but here it strangely doesn't mud up the mix very much. It sounds very cool too, so I'll let the senseless use of low end reverb slide. For now :)

Hmm, the piano part was great, the melody and supporting harmonies are good, but I think it's the wrong choice of piano. The one you're using has no dynamics at all, and the velocity is way higher than what is realistic in any sense of the word. This makes it sound strikingly similar to so many cheesy trancy songs that use FL Keys. Which is unfortunate.

There's a noticeable degradation of sound quality due to poor compression at 0:49 and 3:42. Fix that please.

Ok so I'm going to put a generic overall paragraph here to tell you I thoroughly enjoyed the piece and any flaws I'm pointing out are quite minor and strictly my opinion (except those near-clipping spots I mentioned. Seriously there's no excuse not to fix that :P). Very nicely done man. Keep up the good work!

Step responds:

Wow, man, epic review. Now I know what it feels like getting walls as reviews xD. At first you're like 'HOLY CRAP' and then once you finish reading you're like "Wow, that was awesome", right? Hehe, thanks for the awesome review, I worked really hard on this so any constructive criticism is greatly appreciated.

To answer to your first paragraph, now that you mentioned it, the high end is a bit too prominent in this. I'm not one to make bassey songs (my first attempt at Drum'n'Bass can be compared to the sound someone makes when puking :3) so I can't disagree with you. I'll definitely get around to balancing this out a bit more, although maybe I can blame my terrible Ye Olde Subwoofer, which makes the low end of everything I hear through my speakers virtually nonexistant xD.

Also, regarding the sweep at 1:40, you're completely right. It just didn't come out how I wanted it to lol :P. I'll have to make it sound less like white noise :D.

Regarding the second paragraph, I used that transition like 4 times in the song xD. I feel that it sort of links the song structure together. Also, I was lazy and couldn't think of a better transition :3. Well, glad it worked out then ^^.

As for the 3rd paragraph, yeah I always try to vary the moods in my songs with breaks, ambient parts and all that. An epic song isn't all epic, so I'm glad you liked that part.

4th paragraph:
"There are some gems in this piece that i only noticed when cranking up the volume quite a bit."

Lol, I won't dare turn the volume higher than usual, or I might risk making my other ear deaf too xD.

"The hi-passed little buildup around 1:47 for example, there's this kind of resonant tone hidden deep inside the noise. A perfect example of juicy synth bits that I'd like to hear more of."

Haha, that was unintentional :P. You really have an ear for music ^^.

"Another thing I only noticed when I listened to it quite loudly is the quite extensive reverb on the low end."

Hmm, yes, I tend to add reverb to a lot of things; in this case the kick I used to add emphasis and the bassey arp. That'll probably explain the excessive use of reverb in the low end I suppose.

"I notice you used some of those super-processed kicks (VEC I assume?) from 1:00.

Nope, not VEC. Just some random layered kick samples :D.

"This is something you should be very careful about using for anything but emphasis (kinda like you'd use a crash cymbal), but here it strangely doesn't mud up the mix very much. It sounds very cool too, so I'll let the senseless use of low end reverb slide. For now :)"

Heh, I suppose I got lucky there then xD.

Regarding your 5th paragraph, I'm happy you liked the piano part, although I never actually thought of adding different velocities to the piano part. I sort of have the mentality that trance tracks don't need different velocities lol. Well, again, I agree with you with the different velocities, I'll definitely fix that later on.

6th paragraph, 0:49 and 3:42... You know, maybe people complained about that :P. It's probably because of the fact that there's so much going on at that time, I'll probably not make it so full of loud sounds lol.

And as for the generic overall pragraph; I'm glad you enjoyed the song. I agree with all of the stuff that you mentioned, even if they're strictly your opinion ^^. Yeah there's no excuse not to fix the near-clipping parts, I'll get around to it xD. So, thanks again for the really really epic review. If you ever want to trade reviews again, I'd be glad to. I'm thinking of reviewing your song Absent Minded sometime anyway :D.
I've probably said this too many times, but thanks a LOT for the review!
