Hard to follow
I couldn't get the ovals to over lap like that and how did you smooth the lines to create the figure. The end part explained good mechanics of flash but the begining was so hard to follow I didn't have a figure to do what you showed.

haha yes, Flash has changed since I made this tutorial
the ovals not overlapping might be because they weren't grouped (highlight each then hit ctrl + g to group), or because of the new weird drawing objects thing they introduced xD
to get smooth lines, use pen or line tool then check the options in the properties tab to smooth them the way you want
