You were right, by the way. This is the sort of flash that will make people cry, as I did at the ending. The way the story is told through minimalist animation, music and text is ideal for the overall, Chinese feel of the story, and the song you picked as background music was perfectly matched.

As for the folk who say its weird that the boys expresion never changes well did it ever occur to you maybe he was trying to just look like he was happy to keep his moms hopes up. Think people jeez.
