sorry but i don't get how to play

I can't even get out of the first room. I've tried everything possible (open door, leave room, jump out window, etc.) and nothing works. The only think that gave me a response was "look around" and that didn't help me at all. Maybe I don't have the patience but I spent 20 minutes trying stuff before giving up. somebody tell me what to do.
