Judge Review: Too Damn Short

I never thought I'd say this but you actually do have bass problems in this song. The only bass hit is a single bass drum that lacks a steady beat and is off-putting. You don't need to increase the bass, simply put in an additional bass hit to stabilize the beat, otherwise it's just awkward. Doesn't really need to be that significant either, just a little low-frequency-only hit.

I'm going to ignore the genre here because in terms of a DnB song, this is extremely lacking. If its DnB, where is the drum variation? You have basically 3 drum patterns playing over and over in various layers, which is downright ridiculous for a DnB track. Ironically, the melodic structure here is superb. The chords are wonderful, and the strings beautifully executed. If this was simply an AMBIENT song, it'd be freaking amazing. You have some interesting synth use here and the instruments accompany each other very well.

The song is also, at its core, too damn short. At the time it cuts off, you should have put in a piano melody or something similar and taken advantage of the ambient nature of the track to provide a middle. Then you would have gone back to the starting idea and brought it to a proper climax. You still get a 7/10 though because I adore that melody. I like the vocals too.

thanks for the review, honestly though, i do have a hard time deciding where to put alot of my ambient/dnb tracks, in ambient or in dnb

also, drum variation isnt really somthing i hear alot of in dnb on NG, its mostly about the bass, most ppl just just like a constant running loop for their drums

agreed, its too short

glad you liked the vocals though xD

thanks for the review

peace out

I like it

I only deductded because it was very short. You get into it and then it is over. I really like the pads and the vocals. The melody is very cool and the drums are very energetic even though the feel was to be soft. I love twists like that. Review some of mine if you can for I am trying to get moe people to hear my music. Thanks in advance.

SessileNomad responds:

ill check out your tunes when i have time, im pretty busy atm

thanks for the review though, i wanted it to be longer, but i had a hard time making anything work with it

lol yea

Lol those wierd voices that dont make sense, kinda cliche Imho

anyway... "stop making glitch/ambient and make something different rant here"

Lol those hat's at like 1:08 made me lol.

You need to just chuck a giant wobble bass in there somewhere, like PX9 style :0

Yeah, the quality was pretty good, but the quality was a bit clearer on the last track

Well then

Yeah and a pro tip with the drums, you should add percussion, mix it up a lil and it will sound so much better.

lol i said pro tip, how egoistic of me lol

well i made a song, just go to my page and check it out, its the latest one

you should also work a bit on stereo shapping! bwaa

like say for example, pan the snare to the left a bit, and then the hat to the right, something like that.

for example, this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCKg_q 1Sk9s&feature=related

You should also go for some complex melody lines some of the time

Do you know what a mode is? they can really help you expand on creativity in melody making, instead of just mucking around until you find something you like

experiment with playing different notes over other notes, like have a bass play a D over and over, and then get say a piano to play an e and then a d# or something like that

just trying to help you create something original and nice,

well anyway

take a look at that song i made.

have a good Christmas

buby!

SessileNomad responds:

well the lyrics make sense to me because i know the story behind them xD

i fucking love playing with hats like that

meh i play with stereo shaping in some of my tracks, just not in this one

modes are very hard to write in because most of the time it sounds like your hitting the wrong note, modes take away tonic notes and leading tones so its very hard to make melodies in modes...at least for me

playing the d note over and over and over is called a pedal tone and i usually stay away from them, they cause alot of repetitiveness, the only time u use them is when a pad or somthing is using the same note, but changes the main chord it does...if that makes sense..horay

also....lol d, d#, and E, you know how hard it would be to make a melody with those notes involved, the only way i would do it is if i were playing in like E minor and i wanted to sharp the seventh degree of the scale, which i would not be doing very often xD

ill check it

peace out

It was OK... I can't listen in too great detail because someone is sleeping in the other room and I don't feel like wearing my headphones. But from what I do hear, the pads are nice, but a bit loud compared to the drums (even for ambient). And TheKoltred, while being an ass about it, was right - it needs a bass. He didn't say it needs a "wobble saw bass detuned 50 cents." A regular ol' sub would do this song great justice. That's pretty much all that's missing, and then the mixing could be a little better. But overall, not a bad song. Keep it up.

SessileNomad responds:

agh fine ppl ill go back and throw more bass on the sine sub im running

Pretty nice

I have no complaints except it the strings or pads, or what it is seems to be too high in some parts. Maybe its the frequencies I dont know. I have that problems eqing myself.

SessileNomad responds:

it progresses as the track goes on, the string does start hitting some pretty high notes, i thought it had a great emotion to it though, plus i had to add variation with that since it was such a short track

thanks for the review man, glad you liked it

peace out
