gingermagicman and anyone else wondering, the 13 stripes stand for the 13 original colonies, the 50 stars stand for the 50 states. white signifies purity and innocence, red signifies valor and bravery, blue signifies vigilance, perseverance, and justice. (a different one i've heard is that red stands for the blood of the patriots) the stars stand for Heaven: the ultimate goal, and the stripes stand for rays of sunlight. one thing i found interesting was when they were thinking of a national bird, ben franklin wanted it to be the turkey. and when congress was choosing the national language, english won by one vote, it was almost german.
