My Kind of Music

Love it... This is definitely my kind of music. It's not often that a person really knows how to put the sounds together to make it sound professional. Great job.
What program are you using, and how do you get that awesome guitar sound in the background?
If you get a chance, give my stuff a look. I tried to do an orchestral piece, but I don't think I captured that feel you got so well. I have to know how you did that guitar.

Rottenbeard responds:

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm using FL Studio 7, Atmosphere (Much of the strings you hear are actually a mix of string/synth pad) and East West Gold Orchestra. I think that was it..

The awesome guitar sound is nothing more than Guitar Rig 3 and my guitar :). Though what you might mean is the full body of the sound, which is achieved by double tracking the guitar (recording the exact same thing twice, then panning one to the left channel, one to the right channel to get full "stereo" sound).

If you have guitar rig, the amp preset I chose was "aggressive" under the Metal section, that's all I used for the guitar sound. I didn't even EQ the guitar at all as it sat in the mix perfectly, how you hear it is how it was recorded aside from adjusting levels.

Thanks for the comments and I hope i've been of some help. I'll be sure to check out your piece.

Regards,
Daniel

Love it

This is one of my favorite of your songs. It feels like it should open an epic medieval movie or something. My songs are still better, but you got chops kid!

Rottenbeard responds:

Like pork chops?

:)

This is FL?

How did you do this in FL Studio? The instruments are fantastic, the mastering is so precise, and... well, I guess I'm not using the program to it's full potential. The song was awesome. That's all that needs to be said.

One question kept going through my head, though... what instrument is the guitar? Is that a real guitar recording or is it a VST?

Rottenbeard responds:

All of my songs use real guitar John. I play a lot of my instruments live (Bass, Guitar, Drums, Flute at the end ;)).

Keep in mind that what you are hearing is all done with VST's that dont come with FL Studio, you could get these same results in any DAW that supports VST's really. The FL Studio stock instruments are merely "OK", and really only suitable for techno/trance music.

Thanks for the review :)

Pretty

But at 1:03 on that roll, you should of added some more percussion. I mean you could of made a really really powerful statement and you could of done so much more with the percussion there. I think that the music is nice but i think that the percussion is really lacking :\ and i dont feel like it adds up to the intensity of the rest of the piece. But i do like this alot.

Rottenbeard responds:

I agree the percussion is lacking. I actually wanted that roll to be longer, and im pretty sure it WAS longer at some point and I think i ended up cutting it down by accident and then not noticing when going over the song in the mastering process. At any rate, i'm not too good with orchestral style percussion, it's something i'm picking up slowly, I don't do much music in this particular style so it's a new experience for me, I want to get better at it though. I'd love to get some of the more explosive orchestral setups you hear by guys such as Danny Elfman or Clint Mansell, or especially some of the stuff composed by the guys at ImmediateMusic.

Anyways, I appreciate the constructive feedback Lightningpichu, thanks!

Daniel
