Reviews for "Memory"

The first ever interactive flash

Wow, well I dont know what to say, breathaking at the very least! And I thought R-A-G-E was good.....
The whole presentation of this was very good expecially the 'memory' bit with the jumbled up writing. Everything in this seemed like a dark dreamworld atmosphere, and from beginning to end you spent the flash trying to understand, and I knwo this sounds like a sad ocmparison - but it really was like through this whole flash you were 'searcing' for answers, trying to pick out pieces inb a large complex puzzle. This affect is amazing and Is extremely difficult to do, not often have I watched a flash where I am so confused, where at the end my mind is completely boggled and it takes a few minutes to take it all in. The capability to do this is so important, because like the title suggests this really does relate to the name 'memory' because the character is experiencing these such horrific flashbacks - what you are very successfully doing here is actually CARRYING out the confusion the character in the story here to the actual audience, this gives us a tense and scary emotion and we are feeling what the character is feeling; this alone deserves extra credit because in a way we are actually INTERACTING with the story, we are touched by a mere flash which is why I gave this so high on the interactivity department, I frequently found myself jumping out of my seat hairs raised experiencing what the character was experiencing. I never once on Newgrounds have really felt this before, and it was one of those rare moments which made you think.
My true feelings on this flash already described to you, ill sum it all up. First off, very well done on the beginning of this by the way, i really wasnt expecting that thing to jump out of me! I thought by the creepy writing and scary tune 'wow this is going to be powerful!' but a flash is usually like a film : it starts all happy and you wait most the time waiting for the boldness to begin - but you did this right at the beginning! Oh yes, you made us jump out of our seats RIGHT there RIGHT then - and because an audience rarely ever experiences this, thats why it was so unexpected! The switching was also effective as you began in a dark atmosphere but when you made it all cartoonish it was a brilliant contrast, and I used this as a few moments to gather my breath before it plunged back into the whole 'darkness' theme; which is good becuase when you cause the viewer to feel relieved they are having a break from the evil and taking a moment to gather their thoughts to find the 'truth' in the message you were sending out you KNOW you are captivating your audience in the right way, you know you are getting to the watcher which is exactly what you should want :) this switching from light to darkness also in a way gave us a comparing mind and if you will showed us the 'reality' from the 'disire' - in a perfect world everything would be happy in the cartoonish part of this flash. On a smaller note, the menus were well set out and also raised the interactivity level of this. Sound did an excellent job and has its own personality in setting the scene. Graphcis could be better but i really wouldnt focus on that, what matters is the powerful message and content of your work, and a pretty excellent content at that :)
All in all give this a 10 and vote a 5 as in all my months at NG i have never seen a flash that deserves it more, i only give out the perfect score if i really thinkthe flash dserves it and if it manages to capture me in the right way - and both of these you pulled off, you should be very proud of yourself. I know I havnt made any suggestions but i really am definant that this needs none, this truly was the first 'interactive' flash i have ever experienced, and i wanted you to know how your audience felt during that even if this review was a little lengthy.

I heartily wish you good luck on future flashes and I really hope to see more of this soon, i truly do admire your style of work :)

Wow such a wonderful review! Where to begin…

Wow you are an amazing analyst, you came up with meanings inside the movie that even I didn’t realize, and now that you mention them I begin to realize many things about myself… This movie definitely reflects many things about me, and its just… I’m quite totally speechless! (reads again)

Yes you are so true, I always love to capture the viewer and trap him inside my movies, inside my dark thoughts, I’m not sure if I was carrying the confusion of the ‘ghost’ or if I was carrying the confusion that’s in myself! Really you’re making me think of things now..!

Dreams become nightmares, and nightmares become dreams. My way of doing my art is always in combining opposites, really I don’t know what to say here…

You have given me a review that makes me think very very very deeply, wow, I can almost ‘image’ what you are saying to me! I’m really sorry for not being able to give you a response that is as great as your review, I’m really totally speechless here! And I thank you very much for one review that will stay in my heart for forever… This is one… very.. good.. review, it touched me… no, it actually hit me like a dart, right in my heart, but don’t worry that hit didn’t hurt at all, this review really moved me!

I deeply thank you from the bottom of my heart for this review!

Impressive in the extreme.

I've seen films. I've seen art. I've seen art films. But what you've made here, masterpiece or no, is one of the most deeply moving and affecting pieces of animation (FLASH animation, no less) that I have ever seen. Being 19 years old I suppose that's not saying much, but the point stands: this was truly a sight to behold. The fact that it addresses an issue with which I can identify--namely the gravity of war--probably tilts it in my direction somewhat (I don't tend to like film that I don't understand), but even apart from that, this movie provokes something which any filmmaker knows is far more precious than a standing ovation: a deep, introspective, contemplative discussion of things which are fundamentally profound. The gravitas was perhaps a bit overdone, but when one is dealing with such a grimly profound topic, I think that a certain amount of going overboard on the gravity can only further enhance the point being made. I admire you for your vision, I applaud you for your efforts, and I marvel at your results. Keep it up, and congratulations.

Xenosteel responds:

Yes the gravity is war is so tragic, I never experienced it myself, but we have a saying: "Don't say you know if you haven't put your hands in the water", but I spoke as if I knew what was war like...

I really admire what you said, purely honest! Your review is very touching and very true, I thank you deeply and greatly, words are not enough to thank you.. I hope that someday people will open thier eyes to the world

HELLS YES!

WOW! *jaw drop's*

what was friggen amazing!

Review of this and deleted scene.

This penetrated me. It seems like every emotion is represented in perfect tone in this. It made me feel happy, sad, angry, frightened(made the god damn hairs on the back of my neck stand up). I commend you mostly on the horror element of it. I can honestly say that of any horror movies as of late, this scared me the most. Every god damn horror movie is oOOOOoooo look at me running away from the monster to a place where the monster will pop up from the ground and grab my legs and I'll make no true effort to break free, then for no reason the monster will just let go and I'll start running again, I don't care where I run, I'm just running, like Forrest-fucking-Gump. This wasn't like that. This was about facing what comes to you even if it involves sacrifice. Also there's the other elements in there to show you that the people in it have something great to live for. Good job, you need to get a full-length horror movie made sometime, it'd kick all the wannabe's asses. Until then though keep pumping out these gems.
