I empathize with you; I succumbed to Chrono Trigger also, and finally bought it on Amazon. I was tempted to wait to review this song until I played the game (again) when it gets here, but that could have been a while.
Anyways, if my memory serves me right, this is pretty faithful to the original.

Wow... just wow.
The Guitar/violin seem to add to the spookiness/mystery of it all.
I'm not sure it's guitar though... it's very slight, and hard to identify.
The background tones are quiet, but very much present. I have downloaded this for personal listing. The bell tones seem at the perfect volume.
Better than the original in my opinon. Soothing, yet mysterious. I really get a kick out of that.

Schala always seemed like she was one of those characters with a sad past and even her theme seemed to pity her. After i found out what had happened i, of course, changed fate to make things brighter for her. (I was lucky enough to buy Chrono Trigger for the snes for 10 bucks! ^^)
sad,calming and, at the end, even a little heart warming ( at least for those of us who played the game 10 billion times to get the best ending)
