Reviews for "'Asteroids' music video"

Really nice

Well I like the fact you can choose quality and subtitles very smart move. I choose to watch this with than with out the sub titles. I don't think the subtitles take awy from the falsh, it may help people understand the words of the song better.
The music is nice and the sceens go right along with it. The animation is nice, the graphics are the best but are still decent.
Sure a few thigns could look better but they look fine the way they are. What I mean by that is that the space looks good, the use of colors is very nice, but the space ship looks average.
I think is a really nice submission, very different from all the games you have. I amsuprissed you havn't tried more of these. I would not mind seeing more things like this.

Review of your review:

Opening with general praise, you thengive your approval of specific elements, then move onto some personal thoughts and commentary.

From this beginning, you go on to comment on the various aspects, though I think you made a mistake when you wrote "the graphics are the best but are still decent" - I think you meant to write, "the graphics aren't the best but are still decent."

At least I understand your meaning, but it is a tad sloppy.

When you go on to commend most of the graphics bar the 'space ship' I'm left wondering what you're on about, seeing as there isn't a space ship in the movie...

That's the only criticism you offer and it's lost on me slightly, given that I don't really follow your meaning.

You round off though with a generally positive note, implying that I should make more animations of this sort.

It's nice to hear such comments.

As usual, I would have liked more criticism and it seems that here your meaning is slightly obscured.

However, it remains a review that I enjoyed reading, even if it doesn't give me any idea of what I should strive to improve.

Delight.

That's really the only word i can come up with that can describe this movie. It makes you take a deep breath, sighing of delight, and enjoy life. But that's really all thanks to the music. It's not really the kind i listen to, but it has this relaxed and easy-going theme, which i dig quite a lot. It's got odd lyrics, but you managed to draw it up to this movie very well.

Another thing that i've noticed about your movies. It's the fact that they all have very, very low filesize. I haven't browsed through all of them yet, but i don't think there's a single one of them (of those you submitted) that has over 500 kb. I think this shows that you care for the viewers, so that those with slow connection doesn't have to wait that long. I wouldn't have cared much if this was a movie that was at 4 megabytes, partly beacuse i have a speedy internet, but mainly beacuse this movie is really good. Let's stick with the last mentioned reason, shall we?

Though it hasn't been an outstanding work on the graphics, i still find it pleasureable. It pleases me in some way i have encountered few times in my life as a reviewer. Take the part where the windows opens. It wasn't smooth at all, it was just, all right. And when the boy and the girl got drawn, i found it very... cute. I don't use that word often, but i can't seem to find a better word to describe it. And the space background looked very nice, with it's cascade of colours that reminded me of some book i read back when i was seven, so that brought back a memory of mine. It also happened to have some strong emotions underneath me. What are the odds of that? :) Also, the very asteroid was drawn i childish way, but still.... cute, and about as goo as i could draw one myself. And when the two astronauts came hoovering by, i thought they were exeptionally good made, except for the faces. Not horrible, just not good.

No violence at all, very little humour, due to the funny lyrics that made no sense at all, though it was alright with interactivity, since you put up quite a lot background information about yourself, the animation, and someone else. Forgot who. Was it the band maybe? I suppose i'll know soon enough.

So, it's a movie that has been done by heart, i can really feel it. or, if i happen to be wrong opn that point, then i don't want to be corrected. This is now one of my fauvorite flashes on newgrounds, only beacuse of the impact it had on me. Great job!

Bezman responds:

Your review is lovely to read, if only because I'm glad you enjoyed it. You have a way with words that makes your own emotions echo in the readers mind.

The main criticism I would make is your seeming reluctance to make any real criticism.

There are a few points throughout your review, where it seems as if a criticism is about to emerge from your typing fingers.

However, they remain submerged, almost invisible.

"But that's really all thanks to the music."
"it hasn't been an outstanding work on the graphics"
"It wasn't smooth at all, it was just, all right."
"...except for the faces. Not horrible, just not good."

It's obvious that there must be parts you dislike, but you seem to dodge and skirt around them, determined to divert attention from your having mentioned them as soon as you can.

In my mind, a review (when partially directed at the author) should consist of 3 elements - some positive comments, some constructive criticism and an overal summary of your thoughts and your 'experience'.

I think your review would have been even better had it had some more specific criticisms. Some suggestions for improvement.

Having said that, I can understand the ambivalence about the graphics, for example. Maybe they're technically bad but you enjoy them in some ways?

You mention the low filesize in my work, but fail to realise that most of them are silent.

You have a little bit of humour in your review, which is nice.

The review was a great read and thanks for that. If I'm feeling down sometime, maybe I'll read this review.

Nice...

It is a pretty good movie, it is maybe the best movie of yours I have ever seen, I enjoyed watching it.
First of all, the graphics is pretty damn good. Your charecters are pretty well drawn, they look like real people, like real astronauts. However, in the part of "You are a boy, I am a girl", they were pretty awfully drawn. You only showed lines in this bright purple of yours, and it didn't match anything, neither the enviournment nor the style of the movie. The backgrond was also pretty good, however, the space at first doesn't really look like the real space as it is seen from below. The blue and green and red doesn't match the reality. I like the way the astroid is drawn, it was in a very good drawing style like a drawing of a 5 years old girl, it was very nice. I like the drawing style of everything in this movie, it all looked like a 5 years old girl's drawing. The animation also matched the graphics style, the frame-by-frame like animation adds a lot to the graphics' style and the style of the submission. So as the real animation. Just fix the background of the sky at night and the charecters with the purple colour.

Second of all, the style of this movie was pretty good, everything matched the song which you chose, as well as it's meaning. the fact that you chose this movie to have a drawing style of a 5 years old drawing, is very good and it added a lot to the style of this fantastic clip. However, the fact that the background of the space is not really like the reality, or not like the other drawings, is pretty bad. The atmosphere you built in this movie was also pretty confusing, you changed the atmosphere of the movie every second (the window, the purple charecters, the astroid etc.). This quick change of the enviournemnt and atmosphere takes a ot of points from the style of the movie. You should stay in the same atmosphere all the time, or if you change the atmospheres, change them slowlier than in this movie. So, in general, the style in this submission is pretty good, just try and match the slowliness of the song to the atmosphere change.

Third of all, the sound in this movie was very, very good, it was a pretty good choice for a clip like this one. First of all,the atmospheres you built matched the song. However, you changed them to fast for a slow song like this one. The graphics style of the movie matched the song and it's message to the world. The song also matched the animation in this movie perfectly in the movie aspect. The song is also pretty good as it is, I enjoy listening to it even without a movie, although the movie adds a lot to it in many ways. So, the song is a great choice, but 10 is perfect so...

Fourth of all, the script of this movie really represents the saying ion the movie literally, but you didn't get into it's deeper meaning a lot... Although you showed the song as it is in simple words on the screen, you didn't show us anything too great that we couldn't picture to ourselves. You should also add an aspect from your point of view on this movie, something special that e don't know. Without it, it is pretty boring, because I can picture everything I see there with my brain. so you should add something that we don' see everyday, something which we wouldn't imagine by the words of the song. In other words, show us things beyond the simple words.
Anyway, it was a pretty good movie, very nice job, well done. (i hope I get 8\10 for this one >.<)

Bezman responds:

Though you choose to present your review as four discrete points, it seems to me that you're almost doing yourself a disservice. Each paragraph makes a number of points, with little waffle and an amazing amount of content.

You open with a positive comment, but you don't let your high regard of the animation get in the way of making constructive criticism and giving a number of suggestions.

Two points I don't fully agree with - the insinuation that the background /should/ look anything like space or that the wibbly purple people didn't match anything else. However, your thoughts seem carefully considered and carefully explained. They provoked me to think about your words, consider things I may not have considered. And that's possibly the best thing a review can do, from the point of view of an author (I think).

I wouldn't have understood what exactly you were meaning by 'the atmosphere' when you say:

"The atmosphere you built in this movie was also pretty confusing, you changed the atmosphere of the movie every second"

However, the phrase in parantheses meant I quickly realised the gist of your meaning more exactly.

"Third of all, the sound in this movie was very, very good, it was a pretty good choice for a clip like this one"

The sentence above seems to insinuate that I would have created the animation first (or at least started it), before choosing the song. I'm sure you realise the opposite is true and everything was simply made to fit the song though.

Your final paragraph is a wonderful one, again stating things that needed to be held up to my face. Delving more into general musings and thoughts regarding the genre, the words go beyond giving simple advice about the elementary constituents, such as the graphical competence, the balance of colours or whatever.

A mode of thought like that - changing the intent to "add an aspect from your point of view on this movie, something special that [we] don't know"; "get into it's deeper meaning" is a change in the way of thinking that can have greater repercussions.

Of course, the two - intent and skill - are both important. But rarely do I recieve a review which pauses to reflect on the latter.

Any criticism I make of your review is simply a nit-pick in order to fulfill what I see as obligations in any review.

Firstly, you have a few typos.

Secondly, I think your sentences could be better formed; they are slightly slumsy at time. At some points I felt your sentences might have benefitted from a semicolon or a dash.

Thirdly, your reviews title - 'Nice...' seems a rather weak opener.

None of those points detracted in any real way from the content of your review, which was magnificent.

I would have been interested to hear about your thoughts on my special features, or if you didn't consider it worth even beginning to read them.

But really. This review is awesome. Any improvements would simply serve to bring it that much closer to perfection.

Thanks for writing this review and giving me such excellent feedback. Seriously. Thank you.

I rate your review - 9/10

ZOMG ASTEROIDS

Good work

The song was alright, a little mellow but alright. Despite the song the flash really shined through with its graphics, they were imaginative and well made.

Keep up the good work

Bezman responds:

I review your review: Your title made me chuckle. I like the fact that you do give explicit personal opinion.

Though you gave it an 8, there must be things you disliked other than the music. It'd be nice if you specified what I should work on.

As a rule of thumb, I personally try and give a bare minimum of one positive comment, one suggestion for improvement and one overall appraisal.

Flattering and enjoyable review to read, but could do with some constructive criticism.

Nice music video

The graphics in this flash were pretty good. Nice drawings of the background and characters. The animation in this flash was pretty good. The sound, the music, not bad. I didn't like it much, but it did fit with this flash well. This flash, it's a music video, that's fine with me. It was quite a good music video with the images you created that matched the lyrics.

There were information about you, the flash and other things, which I thought was good. :) Nice work.

Bezman responds:

Glad you liked the extras.

So the reason the score wasn't higher was mainly just because of the music?

Or was it the length?

Enh, it's a good score anyway for what it is and I'm glad you liked it (I think). But I'd appreciate it if with other reviews, you made it clearer what the worst thing was that I should concentrate on improving for next time.
