The collab of the century... Eh, probably not, BUT STILL. Come on down to Lard Land Fun Park, The place where screams come true! Music by the UNBELIEVABLE GOOSEWORX and my good friend Courtney Mills as the Tickettes!
All Puppets built by me!
Lyrics by me too!
This is demented and nuts! I love it. It reminds me of classic demented puppet shows, Meet the Feebles in particular. Very different, but very interesting. Make more!!
Demented and nuts are my forte. Glad you like it! We need more messed up puppets in this world.
Really like this, and makes for a much-needed breath of fresh air compared to the stiff cut-out Flash type animation that most people tend to do nowadays. So much life in this.
If I do have comments, it would be the technical execution of the video quality, colour grading, and the keying:
- the overall colour looks faded and desaturated. Now you have triplets - with some small changes you will have three more distinct puppets ( which are still based on the same puppet).
Also, it would be interesting to have different eye expressions, depending on the mood of the character.
- the keying is pretty bad, and it results in obvious fringes and halos - definitely needs improvements.
- the all-caps subtitles don't really work that well. The faded gray is relatively hard to read. Check how regular TV formats these.
I feel you've faded the muppet parts because you wanted an old-fashioned look, but it doesn't really work: it now looks as if this is a 80s NTSC VHS recorded and converted video - I would just keep it sharp and saturated.
Otherwise, nice work. I also like the cutting, and compositing of multiple instances of the same characters. Perhaps consider changing the eyes of the same characters a bit that you clone into the scenes in order to give them more personal character.
What camera setup are you using?
Thank you SO much for the comment! First off I really appreciate the constructive critiscm. To answer the question I'm using a Canon Rebel T5i, a blue/greenscreen, and 2 studio lights with umbrellas. The faded color and degrading was intentionally done to give it an old 50's look. I wanted to make it look like an old Walt Disney ad. But I realize it's not perfect. Do you recommend any after effects tutorials that cover this? I've searched youtube but have yet to find a decent one.
As for the keying, I'm using keylight in AE CS6. The keying is not that good and I still need to work on that. I've been looking at tutorials to try to improve.
They eyes on most of the puppets are permanently attached with the exception of Baron Von Shakenburg in which I have different eyes to pop in his socket via velcro. But for the others It's not possible to switch the eyes though I will keep this in mind as I plan to make "Blank" puppets as side characters. That's a capital idea to have switchable eyes!
In any event I'm so glad you liked it and THANK you for the constructive criticism. Every comment on my youtube channel is either "first" or some poorly punctuated troll comment. I'm seriously considering a migration.
Oh my wow. I love this. Awesome puppets, also the 2D animated parts look great. It's dark and it's funny, plus the music is excellent. Really well done, great work!
Wow, Thank you so much! I did the 2d cartoons in illustrator/after effects. I used to animate in flash but I havn't touched the program in years. I mainly do puppet videos, and I was a bit nervous posting them here simply because the focus of NG is animation. I figure TECHNICALLY you are animating the puppets manually so I hope this counts. Either way I'm very glad you like this one. Probably my favorite puppet video. Glad you approve!
