Thousands of years in the future, humankind has spread through the cosmos, colonising countless worlds, and growing apart from a common heritage. One thing which remains relatively constant is the abandonment of traditional religion in favour of the reverence of the ‘Human Spirit’. However one sect of lost spacers will make a dramatic return to monotheism with the discovery of a colossal mass of living crystal, in orbit around an isolated star. Decades of discontent among the crew of their enormous space ship will devolve into anarchy, so the ruling class will fabricate a religion around the giant alien. ‘The Order of the Watch Makers’ will pray to the crystal giant to one day wipe out all human life (outside of their reshaped ship) in the universe, unaware that the vessel itself, controls the non-sentient being. They will believe all human live is worthless alone, and a person can only have value as a cog in the clockwork of a grand machine. Any deviation from this plan will result in immediate execution. A clock being right twice a day is still wrong in the eyes of the crystal God.
