5/8/2024: At some point I unpublished this - I forget when or why exactly, but I think it was because back when it came out, some people in the comments section pointed out that the statistics in this seem kind of pseudo-sciencey and bullshitty (in hindsight, they were right!) and I spent a lot of energy defending myself in the replies which is now very embarrassing.

Then someone messaged me on twitter saying the video meant a lot to them, so now it's back! The video was never really "about" the statistics anyway, so I guess it's petty of me to ignore all the nice things people said and fixate on this one flaw that exposed me as a guy who pretends to be smarter than he really is. But hey, I was fifteen, and only had like three weeks to make this!

Good quality production but the science behind it it's spotty at best if not outright collections trows in the dark . Even leaving all the science to the side , think about it in the following way . Almost every human that ever existed came into being trough the same exact process and we came to exist as a species here do to the simple fact that this is the place that could support life . Where do you expect to find grass ? Growing trough the concrete or on some fertile soil ?

Emrox responds:

Haha yeah I don't really stand behind this one anymore, but a lot of people liked it so I'm leaving it up for now

OMG I AM HERE WTF

I really enjoyed this, but I think those aren't the odds of me being here. Provided with all of those circumstances with the earth, even if it was a different sperm cell or egg cell, or a different great great great great grandparent, that would still be me, so some circumstances do not affect at all that i am living on the earth. They would just be a slightly different me. If you take a crowd of 10,000 people and randomly pick one of them, there is a 1 in 10,000 chance that any one alone will be picked, but it is 100% that there will be one picked.

I think the odds are actually pretty big
The odds of the sun being the exact distance from the Earth?
If it wasn't the exact distance there wouldn't be life

The odds of minerals putting themselves into replicating DNA?
Really low
But as time went on there would come a perfect mix to make everything bloom

It's not that the odds are low
We just had a lot of tries

Great video btw
Really enjoyed it

wow just wow
