+++ ADVANCED WARNING // QUALITY: It may be just my computer, but with the fancy new 'full-screen' option Newgrounds has given us, certain effects during the fight (namely the power-charging blur effects half-way through the fight) seem to cause me horrible slow-down. I recommend watching this movie with the Quality set to "LOW" (Right Click the movie, Quality > Low) - Don't worry, it'll only reduce the quality of these effects, everything else remains exactly the same thanks to how I compiled the movie. Fast computers should have no problem either way +++

Howdy folks,
This is my first ever full flash movie, created using SWISH (The really old program).

The only reason I made this was initially to learn flash, using a basic Alucard v Richter sprite fight as the basis. However, once I started I found myself unable to stop, especially as I started to gain more experience with the program.

It started out as a desire to learn, and ended with a long chaotic rush of half-vampire & possessed vampire killer kicking the teeth out of eachother around Castlevania - Granted, the choreography blows and this certainly won't win any awards, but I learned a lot and had fun trying my best to not only add the characters trademark moves, but pump the movie with tonnes of my own custom work (Photoshopping) from adding StreetFighter moves to customizing and creating my own portions of the castle.

Inspired by Proxicide, and his amazing SFvMK series (Thanks mate, you encouraged me to learn Flash - Respect). Thanks to everyone who posted reviews and comments (I have, and will continue to try, to go through them all as they come [assuming I'm not asleep]).

EDIT: Thank you all for helping recommend this for the Castlevania section! Now I feel like my little flash has a home - Special thanks also for all the votings, ratings and reviews (Daily 2nd Place, my first ever Trophy - Thank you everyone, really appreciated!)

"Absolutely astonishing..."

I saw the great score this Castlevania entry recieved and decided to give it a shot. I was completely blown away. I didn't expect anything so fresh and creative at all. And you say this was mostly you just learning and experimenting? Well you certainly blossomed quite well and it seems you have some very amazing raw talent when it comes to flash. How long did you spend creating this anyway?
I hope you make more of these. An Alucard vs Dracula fight without fart would be great (although that one was amusing lol). I'm sure you could whip up something mind bending with that little formula.

Glad you enjoyed it ^^

I can't honestly recap on how long this took to make, as I do a lot of other project work and this was forged out of multiple on-off hours over on-off days stretching up to three weeks.

I spent each week doing different tasks - First was spent gathering as much resources as I could, the second (and worst) was spent photoshopping each and every single frame of every sprite and creating the animations (as close as possible to the game) which was required due to how awkward and borked SWISH handles Sprite and Animated GIF imports... Third was spent coding and putting together the fight, so apart from the first two weeks, I spent the week learning little tricks on how to spice things up. You can tell by how the quality in the movie changes in each phase - It starts out in a static room with little movement, the second experiments with moving rooms and more active sprites (hallway) then I got to experiment with bigger effects and movement in the Portal room - By then I had so many ideas of what to do that things went completely ballistic when I made the falling segment as it was quite tough to do using the program and I even photoshopped/created all of that portion of the castle, with the only true-to-game part being the Bridge (which breaks) leading to the finale.

I'm very proud of this as it's my first and only full flash movie, but it could easily be beaten by more experienced flashers and I'm sad to say I've not the time or patience to create a new one, at least not right now.

"Very well done!"

wow that was really good, you did really well considering Alucard's limited movements and the very sparce dialogue in SOTN. that's not the easiest game to pull audio from i'm sure haha. but seeing a sequel would be nice, if you get the time i'd love to see it, as i'm sure the rest of the guys who have seen this would as well. how did you get started with flash? i wanna learn too but i don't have the slightest clue where to start or what i need to do it. any suggestions? you did a great job on this for your first movie, so i figured you'd be the guy to ask. oh and by the way i loved how you transitioned the rooms in the castle, especially the falling scene, that was pretty epic. it was nice to see that you changed up the layout of the castle, just like maria said, it has many forms it takes and isn't the same castle twice. i'd love to see something in the inverted castle as well, that would make for some interesting fight scenes, don't you agree? if i could give eleven stars i'd do it haha

I got started in flash years before this, back when I wanted to figure a way to make my own type of flash-website and used to use free-online flash-site designers. Eventually I discovered a program called Swish which I took a month out to try and learn, though it was very slow.

Eventually I left flash-editing for a few years then I remembered trying to make this movie before and decided to do it properly (I lost the first movie and all my other work in a C:Drive meltdown) so I opened up Swish after spending a week or so gathering all the sprites/sounds, editing them all myself (every single character frame and room was edited in photoshop) and then one final week to script it and put it in motion.

Best way to start is to check online for guides on how to use Macromedia (the most popular flash-editor) and go from there, assuming you can get a copy of the program, of course.

I wont be touching flash again for quite some time as I do other projects, but I may get the urge again sometime in the future.

For your first flash, im really impressed.
great choreography +
great sound effects +
great use of sprites +
great music (especially DMC 3) +

too short -
alucard can punch and kick too, not just grab all the time (sorry but i had to point it out) -

overall rating 93/100
epic flash, you must make a sequel.

and 1 question, how long did you work on this thing?

Author's Response:

Can't really tell as I used to work on it on & off continuously, think maybe three weeks or so... Took a week to gather resources, a week to make custom sprites and backgrounds, sounds and the likes, and a week of putting them together and scripting them in Swish.

As for Alucard, I know he can punch & kick (He uses his kick at least five times, each in a different way) but as for punches, I figure if he had his sword he'd have no real reason to punch, and seeing as Ricther was agile enough to evade every single attempt at melee from Alucard, grabbing him made more sense. Also allowed me to have fun with custom sprites (Like Alucard grabbing and throwing people) because apart from punch/kick/sword, Alucards moves are EXTREMELY limited.

Dude, SotN is still my favorite game, and this little flash is the coolest thing I've seen on this sight to date. Awesome bro. Make more!!

I may do so in the future - Glad you enjoyed it ^^

Bit busy with other projects (I do a lot more than flash, so I try not to neglect them) but don't be suprised if I try to create an additional sequel in the future ^^
