A game designed to teach you to recognise the first 20 katakana characters. A character will flash up, after which you have a certain amount of time to click that same character. As levels progress, things start turning on their head... literally.

By level 9, you'll hopefully have memorised these shapes. If not, try again. After level 12, the time limit starts being reduced.

Hopefully, you'll get some enjoyment out of it as is so far.

Constructive criticism is very much appreciated and all reviews are responded to.

This represents the first submission in the revival of an old personal challenge. One new submission in the portal every day I'm not away from home.

5 hours spent in Flash (coding/drawing/testing)
.
Much more time spent planning before.
Lots more to add to this.

"sweet game."

Listen I was wondering if you can create a hiranga and kanji version...

Also work on the graphics, they need lots of improvement. Also think of making a high score table online.

Finally......
(BUILDING SUSPENSE)

Make the game clearer to understand.

A few reviews below, I mentioned a to-do list. Basically, everything you mentioned is in the works. I'll add a high score table when it's more final.

Hiragana and Kanji may not come until next year, but you'll see my progress on NG every so often. When I've totally finished all the algorithms with the 'knowledgeRating' system I've designed, it'll be relatively easy to plug in new text faces and whatnot.

Maybe I'll even make other foreign script stuff afterwards... Arabic, Persian, Korean...

Thanks for the great review!

Shame your increased intelligence hasn't rectified your poor spelling.

"Not a bad idea..."

Learning Japanese myself, I appreciate this kind of stuff on here. However, if you're going to use Flash for this kind of stuff, at least type the actual characters using a Japanese font, or at the very least screen-shot the characters. I advise using a blocky font as it's easy to read. Maybe an idea for the hiragana version?

Author's Response:

Yeah, I know myself that the characters are really ugly. I've been learning calligraphy (on practise scrolls with traditional ink blocks and brushes) but I'm not good enough yet to do a full character.

And even with a wacom, flash just isn't suitable for creating all those flicks and whatnot (unless I spend a day editing all the control points, which I don't really find fun).

If you know of a good font, please let me know. I was gonna scan in the characters from my text book as a stop-gap until I learn calligraphy well enough to paint beautiful characters.

Glad you like it. It'll get much better yet and it's good to know there's an audience for this.

Thanks for the review.

I liked it a lot!
But it's a little boring after some time!

Author's Response:

True.

Maybe the extra visual interest I add later will help with that problem.

Stay funky!
