It is based on the original Hell of Sand Falling Game, although the particle behavior is not exactly the same, mainly because of performance issues. Even with the ActionScript 3.0/AVM2 performance increases, it is not nearly as fast as the original Java version.
I found that using a bitmap to display the simulation would be the fastest way to do it. I'll optimize it some more, and add some more elements and other stuff if people are interested. Let me know if you have any suggestions. Have fun playing.
