Alright Newgrounds Musicians, I have a challenge for you!

Create a song with only 3 instruments + drumline.

You can do anything you want with the instruments, whether it's effects, automation, whatever.

This challenge is for this week, starting today and ending the coming Sunday, which is when I'll be going through them and seeing who takes the cake for this challenge. (may snag a few people for other judges if I can)

No limits on what you can do except the 3 instruments, get at it!

ps: I'm considering making a weekly challenge for audio, doing this one as a starter of sorts to see if people are interested, and if enough people take part, I'll keep throwing the challenges out there each week

That shouldn't be too difficult, most rock and metal songs can easily be pulled of with just three instruments. Can we apply for judge positions?

to be completely honest, it's going to wind up being whoever I can get a hold of on sunday to judge XD

I kinda want to get through judging relatively quickly without having to wait X amount of hours for one of the judges to hop on since I have college classes on mondays ^^;

Well, just explain what sort of judging system you had in mind, and I'd be more than happy to find a gap in my schedule for the job.

probably just the typical 1st 2nd 3rd system, but if there are enough people I could split it up into genres and such, and also list noted tracks

How about sound effects? Do you consider them instruments?

y'know, I wouldn't- when you don't count drums as instruments.

I think it would be fair to count them as instruments, people might abuse this otherwise.

Yes, they also count as an instrument.

The reason behind why I kept drumline seperate is because it often takes more than one percussion instrument to build up a nice kicker and such, and the challenge behind this is one of managing a limited number of instruments to use as your lead/melody

you can make as many as you want for this, although history has proven that using the time you have to create one great piece is always preferred :)

Hahaha, I'll have to record one of the songs I wrote with my four string guitar then. This should be interesting.

Um Im not in because I use upwards of 40 effects per song... So... Unless you made it like you can use 3 instruments and 3 effects + drumline and you can reuse the same effect... So if you automate a cutoff filter, you can make another automation clip with the same effect just different timing?

you can have as many effects as you want, automation is a powerful toy if you know how to use it. Hell, one of my songs I automated the arp to one of my instruments.

1 instrument can have several effects, automate which you want for that instrument if you want to use more than one!

ps: this is coming from someone who uses 100+ instruments in a song and around 10-20 effects per song :P

So while you guys were chatting I wrote this from scratch

3 instruments

So basically it is bass, mid, treble synths.... and a lot of drum line.

Regular:
1 hat
2 cymbols
1 clap
2 kicks
2 snares

Crescendo roll:
1 reverse cymbol
2 snares (One is only used in this section)

So total of 3 snares i guess.

So is there a certain genre? Or is any genre ok?

Here's what I did with 3 instruments for my lead/melody/bass and 2 slicer layers for my drumline :)

I used a few octaves of each instrument at the same time to give the song a little more depth and a full range of frequencies

Everything in this song is straight from FL Studio, nothing was from my external samples :)

I finished my song, but I still have to mix the bassssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssdkfjsd klfj

You know, I think for this challenge there won't be a definitive winner or anything like that, I think instead there will be a thread created as a showcase of what everyone did for their entries, along with some critique

there's just a few different genres already, and you can't say a song of one genre is better than a song of a completely different genre
