In the most recent issue of EGM, there was an interview with Hideki Kamiya, the creator of Devil May Cry and upcoming game Bayonetta. In it, he mentioned that games with female leads have been hard to sell in the past. When I read this, I realized I couldn't think of many games I've enjoyed. Do you have any games that you are particularly fond of that have female main characters?

Two standout games I can think of, though, are the games Rule of Rose and Haunting Ground. Both are horror games, and have several things in common (a girl brought into a strange setting with little to no way to defend herself, her only companion being a dog). Both were excellent games, with Rule of Rose's highlight being it's creepy, tragic storyline and atmosphere, while Haunting Ground did a fantastic job a scaring you and making you feel uneasy the entire time you're playing.

Anyway, Bayonetta looks great.

Project Zero is another horror game with a female protagonist. You played as a Japanese school girl who enters a haunted mansion looking for ever missing brother, armed only with a camera. Several of the Resident Evil games feature women in main roles. Silent Hill 3, one of my favourite games of all time, also featured a young girl as it's lead. What is it women and horror games?

Probably because we typically view women as more vulnerable, and when they're thrown into a horrifying situation like that, we connect with them more and worry more about their safety than we would with, say, a beefy, heavily-armed special forces agent.

Perfect Dark, American McGee's Alice, Beyond Good & Evil, Eternal Darkness, Fatal Frame, Jill of the Jungle (hella' underrated game, btw), %u014Ckami, Odin Spere, Phantasy Star. These are all the games I've played (or remembered) that have a female protagonist.

Portal has a female protagonist (Chell), even though the real main character is GLaDOs even if she is more of an antagonist.

I don't know. Although it always seems necessary for them to wear short skirts.

Anyway, Princess Peach is playable in a few games.

I can't really think of many games that have female protagonists that I've played. Metroid 2, Super Metroid, Metroid Zero Mission, Metroid Fusion and that's about it, some games of the Metroid series.

Beyond good and evil is really good.

The only ones I recall are the Metroid ones.

In Vice City, there's a code where you can play as Candy Suxxx, a stripper. In Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 (what a mouthful), you can be a female, and she's the leader. There is also the WWE SmackDown vs Raw games, but few people play as the women. Also; the Sims

I just beat that game again too, Im still pissed off because I diddnt get that neat gun I should have got if you beat it in less than 5 hours. Still a fun game.

Uhhh that new parkour type game (I cant remember the name for the life of me) from EA coming out soon. The main character in that is a girl.

And most of the time, people didn't even know she was a girl.
