Drum and Bass... 2008-03-12 18:54:31

How do you make a drum and bass song?

I know it sounds "n00bish" but I am really interested. The songs on here sound great, and I want to know how they add that "stuttering" effect to there snares and kicks, it sounds awesome.

I wanna try somethin' a little different, like...mix the style of Drum & Bass with a Hip Hop feel.

Anybody have any tips or tutorials I can view possibly?

I use FL Studio 7 Producer Edition if that helps.

Tips and such would be greatly appreciated.

Too broad. Listen to some.

Make really tiny notes in the piano roll right next to each other. Its called a "Drill"

That's been around since the beginning of drum and bass... Seriously, like all of the old skool tunes and half of the new tunes have hiphop influences somewhere.

Anybody have any tips or tutorials I can view possibly?

Yes: Helpful Links and stuff

I use FL Studio 7 Producer Edition if that helps.

Even better, these links are most helpful for that.

Tips and such would be greatly appreciated.

No problem!

with those ' stutter ' and ' drills ' do you mean that hyper speedy snareroll that kinda sounds glitchy?
also, alot of DNB needs some good drums. since ( i think ) fl doesnt really support really cool drums. download samples on free sites like www.breakbeat-paradise.com that might work. since your using FL try downloading a relatively good hiphop beat-loop and use the fruity slicer! ( set the bpm maybe too 160 and off ya go )

hope this helps.

fl doesnt really support really cool drums.

Well... You can make your own in Fl. Wave Shaper/Traveller.

But, try searching for amen drumloops. Thats all you need.

You MUST slice your beats though. Loops are cheating :P

An alternative would be to put it on the piano roll, and use gates at high speeds... then mess with the pitch and stuff. Also timestretching.

Hm... The first dnb song did use the Amen, but its still a standard today.

the amen break IS still acceptable. The sound of the individual hits is untouchable. There is no other break that sounds like the amen.
it's like using a certain guitar for it's sound or a name brand sax.

What you do to it and how you play it, is what makes it your own. But it's still perfectly accepted in todays Drum and bass. :)

But yes, make sure you slice it. Just looping the Amen break is a no no. You will get called on it very fast.

If you want to mix hip hop and drum and bass, you might want to look into dubstep. Like honestly I wouldn't listen to TOO much drum and bass before taking things seriously--You tend to lose a lot of creativity as your production skills increase. I would suggest to you focusing on ideas for right now, and coming back to them as you get better and better.

Yeah, don't listen to no one, just listen the drums line of some DnB songs and start trying to sopy that...then find some cool bass sound or make it and things come out alone...
