Why do people, mostly Americans, use the stupid Imperial system? Do any of you actually know how many feet are in one mile? Or how many yards are in one mile? Or how many feet are in one league? Without looking it up, I bet more than half of you wouldn't even know. You don't even know your own system. It is ridiculous. Here's why:
1) Hard to memorize.
1 mile = 5280ft.
1 Kilometre = 1000m.
Which number is easier to memorize?
2) It makes no sense. In metric system we have prefixes like Centi, Deci, Mega, Giga, Kilo, etc. All these prefixes actually mean something. You don't have to know how many watts are in one Killowatt, but you can easily find out. A kilometre has 1000 metres, so Kilo must mean thousand. So one killowatt has one thousand watts. Makes sense to me.
While in the Imperial system you have random unit names. Knowing how many feet are in one mile will not tell you how many ounces are in a gallon. Your units are completly unrelated. So you have to know each and every one of them.
3) Conversion.
With the metric system you get nice and round units like 1, 10 ,100, 1000 All of these can be easily devisible by ten or any multiple of ten. These are also numbers on the log scale. So the metric system is scientific and mathematical. While in the Imperial system you get completly random units.
Can you convert 34562453.2346524 yards to inches without a calculator? Well you could, but it will take you quite some time. While with the metric system, all you have to do is shift the decimal point. Way easier in my opinion.
