Have Steam controllers gotten better over time? Do people still use them? Is there a better alternative?

There's better alternatives, like the Xbox 360 controller, PS4, and this Magnum Opus.
...Sadly, I can't show you that here, but THIS LONK will do.

A Xbox 360 controller is a good idea, never tried the Magnum Opus. lol

The Magnum Opus is the Logitech F310 controller, where I decorated it with nail polish (yes), red spray paint, and some shitty tape. I was planning to customize a controller for a long time.

Glad to see that it works well for you.

How is it, does it stack up at all to the Dualshock 4 or Bonerpad?

"The Player 2" hahaha. I have my own trusty F310, though it's fallen second to the dualshock 4 recently.

Nail polish huh? I would of never used that. The tape was a nice touch. lol

Heard it from a friend where he applied that stuff into his Hot Wheels. It was 10 years ago.
Still annoyed that the charger cable for the X360 controller doesn't work for shit...

That is a nifty trick. Glad to see that the controller still works after all of your artwork.

Well it had some minor problems when I sprayed the controller for the first time. The main problem was that the consequences is that the buttons are pretty sticky, and I've to fix that by scraping the paint off the slots with nothing but a screwdriver, knife, and in some cases: a bobby pin. I'll learn from this if I want to spray a controller (or something else) again.

Sticky buttons sounds like a big problem to me. At least, you figured out a way to correct that issue.
I still have and enjoy the Steam controller, but love more and prefer to use the NES30 Pro when I can. It just feels more comfortable, but there are games that the Steam controller plays great that the NES30 Pro won't.

gamecube controllers have good analogue deadzones though
Unless you know of a way.
There's this.
You added the SNES clone so its not a complete loss.

They have other devices, besides the controllers.

No

You need a Steam controller if you want to be good at Steam games.
The idea behind it is solid, but in practice it's only ideal if you're in a situation where you're playing a game that pretty much requires a keyboard and mouse, but you don't have one easily available. I could see it being great for someone who takes a lot of long flights and wants to play something on their laptop. Most other situations I feel like I'd rather find a way to use my K+M or just settle for one of my standard controllers.
Even in the ideal situation you still have to fiddle with controller settings to get it the way you want it. Plus there's a learning curve to using the touch pad as a joystick that I never got over and even with the games that the steam controller works best with it I never felt comfortable.
Plus it feels light and cheap in your hands, but I feel that way about most controllers that aren't the 360 controller.

That statement is wrong on so many levels that I don't even know where to begin deconstructing it.
Happy with what you have to be happy with
you have to be happy with what you have
to be happy with you have to be happy with what you have
I always felt like from the very beginning that it was going to be an awful controller. In the rare occasion that I play a game that's better with a controller, I use an Xbox 360 controller.

Steam controllers are okay. That is not a bad idea.

If you haven't tried it, how do you know you don't like it? You should try it out before you make a decision.

An xbox controller is okay, if you have already. No need to go out an buy one just for Steam.

There is nothing wrong with a Steam Controller. Just curious what others were using.
Those trackpads are something to get to spend time with. But i do prefer an Xbox Controller, but most of all just the regular mouse/keyboard combo

Xbox controllers have many uses, so that is a plus for them.
