Uploading Covers -- Permission? 2016-11-03 19:26:42

Hi, just want a quick clarification on the rules for uploading covers here. When I say "cover", I mean I recreated another person's song with my own instruments/ideas/etc. but did not use any sample of the original song in the process.

The text on the audio project "publication details" page reads:

Remixes & Covers: If your song is a cover or remix, it must be done with the permission of the original artist and must not be for a song that is represented by a major label or licensing agency. We are unable to host this sort of material.

But the text from the "audio guidelines" page from the NG wiki reads:

Note: COVERS of existing copyrighted songs are currently accepted as long as they don't contain ANY samples from the original song - vocals, instruments, sound effects, etc. It is still recommended to perform covers with permission.

So my question is, do I need permission from the original artist to upload a cover of their song here or not (i.e. is it mandatory, or optional, but recommended)? I won't be making any money from this, it's purely for the fun of it.

Thanks!

that's some strange conflicting information there. to my knowledge, you don't need any sort of permission to post a cover, as long as every sound you use is original. i have several covers from bands represented by major music labels, never gotten any grief for it.

As a general rule of thumb, be sure to always check the exact licensing for the picture you want to download. ;)

Have fun

Guys, while I appreciate the help, I wasn't referring to the actual cover picture of an album, I meant that I made a piece of music that is a cover of another piece of music. My question concerns the uploading of music.

The current consensus is that if you made all the parts yourself, it's good to go.
