As far as I've gathered, the distinction between emoji and emoticons is that emoji are part of the unicode "character set". If a font supports them, they can be part of "plain" text. Often, however, software will replace emoji characters with image equivalents.

Emoticons, on the other hand, are simply smiley faces created with by combining existing punctuation marks that have been in character sets much longer.

That said, neither roll of the tongue, I think I still prefer the term "smilies" myself.

I still continue to call them emoticons. I don't really know the difference and the differences imply that I've always referred to them both as emoticons so I'll continue calling them emoticons.
