looking for new animation program 2016-08-17 22:02:07

so i've been using macromedia flash for about a year now, on and off, and it's okay but the lines are horrendous and the features are pretty dated.

long story short, looking for a free - 20$ animation program that doesn't suck.
any suggestions?

I second OpenTOonz - the workflow is very different compared to Flash (but in a good way). Once you get used to it, animating in OT is WAY more flexible and convenient than Flash, in my opinion. And the built-in nodal compositor with advanced particle effects just beats the crap out of Flash.

For more painterly backgrounds Krita is a brilliant side-kick (Krita does frame-by-frame animation as well). It can be helpful to use a 3d application such as Blender and/or Sketchup to assist you in creating quick perspective mockups for overpainting in Krita.

Get the latest and greatest release of OpenTOonz here:

The manual can be downloaded here (Harlequin was/is the commercial version, and OT is 95% compatible):

Two good (paper) tutorials explaining both the paperless digital and paper-based workflow can be found here (includes exercise files):

Toon boom is the best 2D animation program

That depends. Not a single 2d animation applicaiton is "best" at everything. OpenTOonz does paper-based better than TB. TV Paint does bitmap frame-by-frame better than TB. Moho does 2d IK puppets arguably better than TB.

And it also dependent on the version of TB: only the premium edition offers advanced rigging tools and IK for cut-out animation, the node view (which is essential for more complex work!), the Xsheet view, particle systems, shading effects, all the effects, 3d object import, and the nodal compositor. No curve and envelope deformers either.

The basic version of ToonBoom @$500 does not even support bitmap painting. No morphing.

In short, unless you are willing to spend $2670 (or $1880 per year subscription) on the premium edition you do not have access to a number of rather nice features to have (particle systems, for example). And personally I would not want to work in ToonBoom without the nodal view.

And most of the features offered in the premium version of TB are part of OpenTOonz - which is free! Combine with Krita, ClipStudio, Moho, and Blender for a very effective and powerful pipeline - for less than what the basic version of ToonBoom costs. And more powerful features.
