I'm not a really big fan of anime (I was when I was younger, but now that I'm older I guess I've kind of grown out of it) but there's still a small handful of classic anime/manga series from the 1980s and 90s that I really enjoyed during my childhood and am still very interested in today.
One of the classics that I am still very much interested in today is a series called Initial D. Unlike many other manga/animes, which tend to be pretty silly/unrealistic and exaggerate things, Initial D is actually a very serious series that is quite firmly grounded in reality. Although it has it's fair share of scenes involving silliness for a little bit of comic relief here and there, it is (for the most part) a pretty serious anime/manga that, in my opinion, really does an excellent job of depicting the 90s touge/street racing scene in Japan with a great emphasis on technical accuracy and realism.
In fact, one of the reasons why the anime in particular is so realistic is because the production team received technical guidance from Keiichi Tsuchiya, (better known as the legendary "Drift King") who provided much feedback throughout the development of the anime to help make the scenes featured in the series as close to the real thing as possible. All of the driving techniques that were featured in the series are authentic and are actually used by both professional and street racers alike in real life, and all of the cars that are featured in the series are real as well (although only their model numbers/vin codes are mentioned while their make is deliberately left out due to lack of official licensing.)
I searched around NG to see if I could find any cool fan-made tributes to the series, and was disappointed to find only a handful of very primitive 2d top-down perspective racing games (a-la RC Pro-AM) and one parody video that wasn't even really well-made. I don't know how many of you animators out there are even familiar with this series, let alone would consider creating a tribute movie, but if any of you are, it would be really refreshing to see something like that on NG. Just throwing this idea out there, as I think it would be a nice change from the usual stuff people submit to the portal. Knowing how talented some of you guys are, I can only imagine what sort of cool games and movies you could make paying homage to this classic series.
Anyways, hopefully this will inspire some of you to consider doing something like this. If not, that's fine too.
