I would personally recommend Borderlands and Bioshock series. If you're into multiplayer, Team Fortress 2 is a great game.

Not officially, but you can download a fan translation and apply it to a Mother 3 ROM.
Buy a WII U and start with all the Wii games, then work your way to the Wii U library.

If you really want to get into it you'll play the original Mother before 2 and 3. And by the time you finish them I'm sure Mother 4 will be out.
Tales of Symphonia Chronicles on PS3. The original symphonia on gamecube is my favorite game of all time and Chronicles gives you both that game with slightly upgraded graphics as well as the Wii sequel.
