Yes the shonen-based anime tend to be heavily overrated (I maintain that One Piece is a lame anime and a phenomenal manga). I could write essays on all the reasons Bleach is bad.
But here's the bombshell of overrated things I'm going to mention: Hiyao Miyazaki.
For the record, I love Hiyao Miyazaki's films. They're like old friends, and I could watch them over and over. They're fun, imaginative, and beautifully animated.
But to hear people tell it, they're the bestestest animated things ever to grace a screen, and it's just not true. Which brings me to my first response:

everthing disney ever makes is overrated.
From a storytelling perspective yeah sure I can buy that.
From an animation perspective? Good gravy, no. The golden age of disney animation is still among the best animation ever done. Watch some of them over again from an animation perspective. Jungle Book? The Aristocats? Sleeping Beauty? It's all magnificently animated. And there are some that are outstanding in every respect (The Hunchback of Notre Dame, for instance--music, writing, animation, it was all top shelf. They even kept the obnoxious comic relief character stuff to a tasteful minimum).
Even ones that were somewhat lackluster in the entertainment department (for my money) like Princess and the Frog and Hercules had incredible artists and animators working on them.

Is it wrong that I like the early Dragon Ball and DBZ more then the end bits like Cell and Buu?
I think the Piccolo Jr. fight is a strong contender for best fight of the series. I disliked how pretty much everything after became more about "power" than skill. Freeza is my other choice, but it had the advantage of being built up to amazingly throughout the entire Namek saga.
