Similar to NuScarab's thread here. Might be some unedited copy-pasting, but let's attempt this anyway.
Every year since 1974, the Village Voice newspaper polls hundreds of music critics across the US for its annual Pazz & Jop criticsâEUTM poll. It could be said that it was a sort of Metacritic in a way, showing critic favorites in years past, highlighting fads and predicting future successes. Every poll until 2005 (including a âEUoepromoâEU poll in 1971) has included an essay by founder Robert Christgau, who still participates to this day. Despite the odd way of polling (spreading 100 points across oneâEUTMs list), the fact that itâEUTMs still around should be proof enough that someone somewhere did something right, eh?
But because critics are such fickle creaturesâEU¦ to hell with them. Hell, I say!
The reason I brought it up is, despite my always questionable taste in music, I am nonetheless fascinated and interested in music. Music lists are always fun to read, and polls are even more so. Pick apart the little details, laugh at all the butthurt. I canâEUTMt properly explain why, but I want to try and get something going here like that. And thankfully, ScarabâEUTMs movie thread gave me a starting point.
It's simple: you can either PM me a list of your top ten albums or vote here in this thread. Your ten favorite, the ten you think changed the world, ten you think are just really cool, the ten that you think are influential to what you listen to, any ten! Just be sure to limit it to JUST TEN ALBUMS. Artist names are a requisite, and IâEUTMd also be very grateful if you included the year the album was released.
While we're obviously not aiming for something anywhere near as authoritative as an âEUoeofficialâEU poll, itâEUTMll be fun to see what albums rank consistently high, get a glimpse at what music the average Newgrounder might listen to. You could also write a little about your choices if you so wished (since thatâEUTMs where the best kind of understanding comes from). I might even feature some of your comments when doing the final countdown (count-up?).
For now, I'm leaving this open for two weeks, meaning you should send your choices to me by the 15th of December or so (the objective is to have a final list before the New Year, but itâEUTMs not set in stone).
Here are some guidelines:
- Please note that this is an albums poll - EPs donâEUTMt count and neither do singles, sorry. Compilations are iffy, but as long as they arenâEUTMt âEUoebest ofâEU collections I donâEUTMt see why not. Same with mash-up albums. Live albums are a-okay.
- Albums can be of any language and any age. For some fun, if you do put a foreign album on here, list what genre of music it is so others might be interested.
- Ten might not sound like a good number to choose from. ItâEUTMs hard to narrow it down! But a smaller list means only the absolute best can get through, and that thereâEUTMs less likely a chance for the final list to be impossibly long.
- Have fun! (insert amusing punch-line here)
IâEUTMll make a quick list of some personal picks cuz I ainâEUTMt a-scared of being judged, and also because I noticed IâEUTMve been skipping this step in recent opinion threads I start. These are ones I recall meaning something to me, so in no particular order:
*Michael Jackson - âEUoeThrillerâEU (1982)
*Garbage - âEUoeGarbageâEU (1995)
*My Chemical Romance - âEUoeThe Black ParadeâEU (2006)
*Kanye West - âEUoeLate Registration" (2005)
*Wu-Tang Clan - âEUoeEnter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" (1993)
*Beck - âEUoeOdelayâEU (1996)
*Radiohead - âEUoeIn RainbowsâEU (2007)
*Nirvana - âEUoeNevermindâEU (1991)
*The Beatles - âEUoeAbbey RoadâEU (1969)
*Guns N Roses - âEUoeAppetite for DestructionâEU (1987)
Discuss, ask questions, quarrel and fight and argue over whoâEUTMs right or wrong. So it begins!
