Despite the inaccuracies of Alexa, that right there is true. If you look at daily submissions you can clearly see it decreases a lot from maybe 2007 to 2012.

I wonder what the value was when NG was in its prime.

That is because there's a glitch with the stat that's shown on the portal pages. I've been meaning to fix it, but damn it, this is OLD news.
