Hi guys, I've watched a site grow for a while, and they seem to be doign really great, was wondering if anyone has ever looked into Pencilkings? In the morning, Im signing up for a years subscription... Practice practice practice! - I know there is plenty of free user material out there, to help you better your drawing ability and so on - But, something about these guys makes me feel a little more comfortable. Has anyone read any bad reviews?

Hiya Pockets!

I seen your post and I cannot help but reply. Let me start off by saying that I am about as biased as they get . I helped start PencilKings.com so I just wanted to be upfront with that. But please let me explain a little bit about our project.

We started the site as we are artists ourselves and we set out to create a site that featured instruction by top caliber artists but without the hefty pricetag usually associated with top training. When I left college, I had over $30,000 debt and I thought it was a massive cash grab that was not necessary. Although the training was good, I thought it was a tough to start a new career and a new family with such a financial burden. So now that the tools are now readily available, we set out to create an alternative that we always wished existed. So that was the impetus for PencilKings! And at $10/month, we tried to make it affordable for anyone. All you need now is a desire to learn. That is the core mission of this collaboration.

Right now, we are adding a new lesson every few weeks. This will increase in the next few months too. And as we mature, we hope to eventually have the whole spectrum of art training covered.

Our project is still quite new and we are working some things outs but that said, we have a ton of new artists lessons in the works and I am excited to show off some of the lessons and artist we'll be showcasing soon. And we are very receptive to feedback and do like to hear what our users think! For example, if we get enough requests for an artist or a lesson title, I will personally go out and get it made.

So you have my personal invitation to check us out. Try us out and I would love to hear what you think. If you like it, please share the love too ;) We are growing fast but can always use a few kind words for those who have yet to hear about us.

Take care,
-tim

Bahahaha, I used to use Mitches Site, before he closed it down to start up pencil kings, and Ive been watching you guys grow! Ya'll are awesome about feedback and responding. I signed up this afternoon, and dove into the Pose Lessons by Laurie B, though I think its a bit too advanced for me at the moment, and Im going to go into the parts first, even though Im picky and dont want to start small! - I cant stop cracking up, that you saw this - and hopped on an account, just to reply!

I checked out the site. The tutorials all look pretty excellent. The only drawback is of course the price- there are plenty of excellent tutorials available online for free, though they take a bit more digging. (I think kinsei and lintire both have massive bookmarked tutorial libraries if you're ever hard up for something on a certain topic.) It's kind of like paying for porn.

If you have the money to spend and know that you're prepared to put in the practice time necessary to make the tutorials useful, go for it.

Personally I wouldn't spend money on an online resource when there are free alternatives, but then, I'm broke. PencilKings seems like a swell group deserving of income, and I certainly sympathize with the urge to replicate art school on a cheaper scale.

You bet, and its always growing!

Although I will admit that their is one very powerful advantage of a pay site and that would be the mentality of the users.
People will think "Since I'm paying for it, I'm going to damn well use it!"
And that should keep the user base pretty strong as long as their is something to learn and do. But if it is truly as your promise, and will constantly have new material going up then that shouldn't be a problem.

Excellent opinions guys. Definatley agree on the user base - and the other upside, is feedback - the admins etc, since we are paying, are more inclined for responses to help you etc. and makes you feel kinda, idk - important? Haha. Ive completed a few lessons so far, and Have a lot more to scavenge through - and im glad you guys thought the place looked promising. :) - time to kick ass, take names, and post art! (PS, Did you see I got scouted Kinsei?!?!?! :D )

So, it's been a while and the reviews on this page are from quite a while ago, so I wanted to share this review for PencilKings.com

I will start this Pencil Kings review off with a little back story. I have been drawing since I was a kid. For years I had struggled to learn and find resources that actually made me a better artist. In 2014 I really found a passion for drawing more so than ever before and I wanted to learn. I wanted to grow but I had no idea where to start, or how to get where I was going. But Pencil Kings changed all that. I came across an ad for free art courses on Pencil Kings on drawing facial features. As I went through each video I was amazed by how much information there was, the insight, the relatability; and it is all broken down into easy to learn steps. There was more information packed into these thirty minute courses then I had learned in ten years. So here I am now writing a Pencil Kings review and how it works.

New courses are published bi-weekly, but there is so much more to Pencil Kings then just the amazing courses. They put together challenges that walk you through a specific subject for four weeks. You are joined by hundreds of other artists that participate so you are not studying alone, and all of these people come together on a unique Facebook group so you can share and collaborate with the other participating artists. To top that off, there is an instructor that runs these Facebook pages, and is always around to answer questions, comment on your submissions, and it is free to subscribers. The most important feature that the site has are its forums. A place where all the subscribers can get together and talk about anything and everything. You can introduce yourself, publish a sketchbook, talk about the courses, have general art discussions, and request courses. It is worth mentioning that they also provide informational podcasts, with interviews, tips and tricks of the trade, and so much more.

To sum it up, the rates are reasonable, the people are personable, the courses are easy to follow and put together by professional artists. You won't break the bank, there is absolutely no commitment and you can work at your own pace. You can focus on what you enjoy, study how and where you want, because it is portable. Watch on your computer, iPad or phone, listen to Podcasts while you travel, and a community that moves with you. It is sort of like your favorite bra. But what is really amazing is that everyone is here for the same reason - we love art and we want to get better at it.

If you want to read what other people are saying about Pencil Kings check out this site.
