Lamps, Pots, Vases (free Samples) 2009-05-02 05:25:15

Hi there folks !
Ever heard of "Chamber Music" ? bet so.
Why not "Kitchen Music" then ?
Eh, just jokin'.

So, one day I was listening to Tonehammer's Propanium - a very nice sample bank for NI Kontakt of a metal based, tongue drum. (59$)
I loved it from the first note, but as I am short on money these days... :(
The solution come when my wife's desk lamp felt down... what a sound... mmm... why not sample it and make my own "lamp based instrument" ?
So, I took it and record fast.
Just one layer of a single note can sound like this:

Just one layer, loaded into FL default sample + reverb & delay.
This is an example of how sounds alone (first part) and how can be integrated in more complex (porn groove) music (second part).

Sounds used:
Mib.wav and Sib.wav for free download.
If you use in FL, load in FL sampler and assign as root note Eb for Mib and Bb for Sib.

I didn't stop here, after making that and seeing what can be done I was running all around knocking every vase, pot, metal bar ... my wife was totally exasperated :))
Well, the results are more impressive.
3 velocity layers, some percussive effects (like UDU drum) out of vase and some metal bars and pots.
As an example of the new layered samples:

Sounds used:
Metal FX 1
Lamp 1
Pot Drums
All for free download and use.
All as 16 bit, 48 khz wav. files and Reason NN-XT patch.
Gear used for sampling:
- microphone Oktava MK 319
- mixer Behringer Eurorack UB1204FX-Pro

Upcoming, a multi layered Pax sampler format for FL users.

Cheers

I love Tonehammer's stuff. I agree propanium is an exceptional library I intend to pick up sometime soon :D!

Very creative. I'll be taking those files ;D

Please drop me a line after using those (or post a link here), I'm very curious how that can sound in other people's mixes.

I just googled on that and found it.

WOW tons of samples !!!

Actually I just downloaded the free samples and... well... for some "VERY clean, high-fidelity samples!" recorded with "Marantz EC-335 split-stereo microphone" those sound quite weak and dull...

mine are better :p

Now serious, just compare.
And my samples are layered already.

Wasn't planning on that, but if you want them
here they are minus the medicine bottle and cell phone noises.

I downloaded the two .wav files and whenever I get the chance I'll make some instruments with it in Logic's EXS24 (I need to practice this) I'll try to remember and do this and make a song when I get a chance, right now it's out of the question.

Sweetness. Mihai = genius

Response to Lamps, Pots, Vases (free Samples) 2009-05-02 23:26:05

Hey I made a patch for Logic users for the EXS24, and a channel strip setting. It's Logic Express compatible too. Hope you don't mind if I post this here Sorohanro. http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?m2 tmmgyw3iu

The .exs file goes into Library>Application Support>Logic>Sampler Instruments
The .cst file goes into Library>Application Support>Logic>Channel Strip Settings>Instrument

It's properly tuned (as good as I could get it), 4 samples are used according to velocity, and modwheel controls cutoff. The channel strip just includes some reverb and EQ, it's a starting point, add whatever you like to it.

I'm very glad that you guys find those files useful, I really think they sound very nice integrated into a song.
@Gorgorothx
thanx man.

@HotActionYiffFur
I'm recording those with all the gear posted in my first post, then edit in several programs (VST effects like EQ and reverb I put in FL, easy to use and fast working), then I save the sounds separately (there are sounds "clean" with no reverb and "wet" with reverb, different attack and dynamic), then I import in NN-XT wav by wav and make a patch.

@gregaaron89
Nice idea with the Logic patches, I guess a lot of people will appreciate.

@Darren-M
All zip. files contains the wavs and an NN-XT patch ;)

If someone can help me convert those to soundfonts or some other format that support layering and can be used in FL...

Response to Lamps, Pots, Vases (free Samples) 2009-05-03 06:11:04

Ok people, nevermind, I downloaded Awave Studio demo (30 days to try) and converted those to soundfonts. The quality somehow it's getting a little "fuzzier" but usable enough.
I'll upload those later and post a link.

The .cst file goes into Library>Application Support>Logic>Channel Strip Settings>Instrument

Great samles made by Quarl:
- Quarl's sample pack
I hope I'll have some time later to make a NN-XT patch and a soundfont out of those.

Original packs:
- Metal FX 1
- Lamp
- Pot Drums
All those contains 16 bit, 48 khz wav. files and Reason NN-XT patch.

Thanks, Soro! Downloaded them all, will be sure to use them in some songs :)

Reminds me of this video of Shawn Pelton.

Response to Lamps, Pots, Vases (free Samples) 2009-05-04 15:29:42

Nice vid, good find there :)
He have quite a good microphone, just with one room mic he can do drums...

Anyway, for those who don't have microphones and stuff, here comes more samples (also for those with microphones, I'm not making discrimination, lol):
Brushed Pot & Lamp.
- A pack containing 16 bit, 48 khz wav. files and Reason NN-XT patches HERE
- Soundfont Brushed Pot HERE
- Soundfont Brushed Pot & Brushed Lamp HERE

Those are less melodic, more percussive and less tunable.

This has inspired me, and I've started creating a song using nothing but recorded samples of random things lying around my house. A first for me, since everything I've done so far has been synthesized...

Glad that I was inspirational :D
Try not sampling "smashing expensive TV" :)) lol

anyway, I found that the brushed set can do awesome hi-hats in a mix.

Response to Lamps, Pots, Vases (free Samples) 2009-05-05 19:51:00

I see that the new brushed set have 0 downloads :(
eh, well, not really my loss, I was losing just time to upload those.

Response to Lamps, Pots, Vases (free Samples) 2009-05-12 19:23:05

It's not very good, but I tried to use the first lamp samples you shared with us.
Kind of made two completely different parts and shoved them together.

P.S. Congratulations on your new album :D.

Response to Lamps, Pots, Vases (free Samples) 2009-05-12 20:00:47

Finally got around to downloading some of those samples, but I'm curious... why is there so much fecking reverb on those brushed pot and lamps? I could understand if there was a little reverb in the recording, but any one in here could have done that on their own. Now I have no choice but to work with the reverb. I would have preferred unaltered samples :(

Response to Lamps, Pots, Vases (free Samples) 2009-05-12 20:50:08

There are "clean" and "wet" samples, but also the clean ones seems to have reverb due to the nature of the sound itself (I guess)... come on, big kitchen pots... those have their own "cave" to resonate :))
