Best compact controllers? 2009-02-08 00:10:18

I want to start making some serious music, and I'm not sure as to what MIDI controllers I should buy. I'm using an iMac right now, but I'm probably going to get a MacBook this year, and I want something that will work good for both. I don't really need anything advanced, so I've been looking at the Korg nanoSERIES controllers. Is there anything similarly priced and sized that's better?

I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for; however, I am using an iMac too, and I would just like to add that my M-Audio KeyRig49 has been holding up VERY well, and has let me doing everything I want. It was only $100.

In a word; no.

The Korg range is IMO the best MIDI controllers out there in their price range and the M-Audio stuff, while much cheaper, I find to be flimsy and unresponsive by comparisson. Bottom line- if you can afford a Korg, get a Korg.

If it's just a barebones midi-interface you want, I'd suggest the M-Audio Uno - I have it's predecessor (From when it was still called Midi-Man) ... lasted me almost a decade without any problems, although I guess there's not exactly much to go wrong :P

I can't really suggest more though, I don't have much experience with other midi interfaces.

I've been very happy with my Edirol:

You can pick one up for about $150 - maybe less.

I also use a Tascam FireOne for transport controls:

See if you can find a local dealer that carries a few different controllers and arrange to demo them before you buy. I'd always recommend putting your hands on actual equipment prior to making a purchase if at all possible.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the help. I'm sticking with the Korg, though.
