I have made a study of the portal for the last few weeks, and have concluded the average amount of quality of movies sent in depend on the time of date. Schedual as follow:
[1]Time of day [2]Ratio of Quality [3]Percent of total movies

8:00am - 12:00pm - 2/3 Blam;1/3 Save - 23%
12:00pm - 4:00pm - 3/4 Blam; 1/4 Save - 33%
4:00pm - 8:00pm - 1/3 Blam; 2/3 Save - 24%
8:00pm - 2:00am - 1/5 Blam; 4/5 Save - 15%
2:00am - 8:00am - 2/5 Blam; 3/5 Save - 5%

According to my studies, most people who submit in the morning decide to get on their computer and make stick cartoons. People who work hard on their movies usually pull all-nighters, and decide to send in their work before they fall asleep on their keyboards. People in the afternoon are 1/3 of the people who make decent movies when they started in the morning. In conclusion, more people need to stay up at night to get the better movies, and people who want blam points should wake up bright and early. For movie creators, they need to work until the end of the day.

Any questions?

How come you've changed it to four hour slots for the last few? Don't you need to sleep?

I get sleep. Most of the times I'm able to fill it in with the number of flash in the obituary over the flashes that were submitted by tommorrow. The data cannot be complete until tommorrow at midnight.

Are u trying to say that it's blam time between 2.00 and 8.00?

That's a pretty awesome thing there, man. Thanks for that. It is very interesting. :D

The main trouble is that the data you are tabulating, although interesting in its own right, really doesn't have much utility ... although the same could be said of some of the other lists *cough*EGRL*cough*

Sometime last summer I started doing a tally of entries. I wasn't particularly concerned with whether they were blams or saves, just the volume of entries broken down by day of week and time of day (setting aside stats for holidays wasn't something I had gotten to the point of needing, as I started after 4 July and quit Labor Day). It's all well and good to observationally state that there's a flood of entries at ~2-3pm eastern, but is there really? Observationally, the full moon brings out the whackos and emergency rooms fill up. Statistically, the whackos come out and emergency rooms fill up just as much on full moons as at any other point in the lunar cycle.

I stopped tallying entries when James mentioned the possibility of there being a pop-up containing similar data. It never happened and I never started back up .. I think I even deleted the sheet lol Anyway, one thing you might consider doing, and it does not actually require you be on at all times, is a stat list one I abandoned. A lot of people here would be interested in that information, as it would allow them to try and plan ahead for an NG fix on a busy day ... let them work out what time would likely be best for them to come and vote to get some BPs. Since my system involved breakdown based upon saves, you'd be collecting the information you are currently tracking as you go along. Additionally, it doesn't actually require you to be around; you can be gone for a week and go back and get the data you missed.

If you're not already doing it, use the link at the base of the 50 Most Recent. They start out sorted by date and time (Eastern) and you can check the PID differential simply by mousing over the links to the entries.

For example, the first entry passing judgment on 11 June is Earthbound ALS Episode 8, arriving in the portal at 00:04. Mouse over it and the PID is 174227.

The first entry surviving entering after 01:00 is Transformers Live On, arriving at 01:29 with a PID of 174238.

The first entry arriving after 02:00 is NG Army News1, arriving at 02:12 with a PID of 17248.

For the 12 - 1 hour: 11 entries, 4 saves (Earthbound 8 - video games).
For the 1 - 2: 10 entries, 5 saves (Transformers - Stupid).
etc.

Situations like this one (I chose it for this reason) where you have ~90 minutes in an hour followed by 40 minutes in an hour will arise. In the first few stats you compile there will be huge B2S ratios in some "hours" and tiny B2S ratios in others due to this overlap. In the long run (after a month or so) they will average out and start becoming statistically insignificant.

One other thing with doing it this way ,of which you need to be aware, is that there is no factor for flagged flash in my system. Just because something didn't get saved does not mean it was blammed. Odds are it was, but there's always some that get whistled every day. Almost all of those whistles will eventually be blammed, so you are pretty safe in presuming that they "are/will be" blams. Some of those whistles will return to UJ if Wade or a Whistle Mod decides they were unfairly flagged. When they do finally pass judgement in ... say a week or a month ... they will appear in the list based upon their original submission date. It's extremely rare for movies to reappear after being whistled, but if you want accuracy you need to know about it and mention it. You can find those flash again, but, trust me, it is not worth the effort required for the frequency of returning flash.

Anyway, that's the system I was using and it might help you back track to fill in some of the blanks in your data. If you've got something that works better for you, run with it.

As much as I love this interesting new statistic, I'm wondering of its potential. As an artist, I wonder if perhaps by sending my movie at a certain time would increase its score. Perhaps, by sending it at a time when there are a lot of good submissions, I'd get better votes from people because they are used to voting high. Or, maybe by sending it at the worst time I'd get the best results, because people would vote high from FINALLY finding something good/decent. (I'd like to point out none of my flash works have been blammed, so quality isn't an issue here) Thoughts anyone?

Response to Portal Time Slot 2004-06-12 12:10:10

Odds are that your better bet for score is after a flood of crap. That first flash that's actually worth watching after a dozen super saiyan stick flash with unoptimized audio is almost a relief lol

Most people will vote normally on it, but there are enough around that vote based upon a comparison with the other entries that are UJ that you'll see a small change ... .05 or so. Unforttunately, this is all subjective, so there's no way to test any kind of control group against which to compare.

Hmmm. Interesting thoughts. I'm really trying to figure out the voting habits of those people who vote UJ. They make up 200 of the votes, and I usually only end up with 300 or so votes altogether, so those first 200 are really killer. For some reason, people just tend to vote lower on my movies UJ. Once its out, the score always raises. Obviously some of them aren't watching the movie (at least not all of it) so I'm trying to figure out what makes them vote what they do. Right now I'm thinking what I need is one really kick ass preloader.
