So, the other day, I was listening to Weird Al Yankovic. You may know him as the "Eat It" guy, or the one responsible for all those parodies circulating the musicsphere in the late 80s. He doesn't just do parodies, he does tons of work in the style of other musicians as well. I found it interesting how all these musicians have different styles that you can't really place verbally, but can easily write into a song. Naturally, that led me to think about how that could relate to Newgrounds musicians, and how basing a song off of someone else's style could help me develop as a musician by looking at music from a different perspective. It was quite fun.

Today's song is in the style of Newgrounds' very own OcularNebula, whose music is often featured as songs of the week, month, or even year in the NAP. Since his songs have a very similar style, I figured that if I were to try this thing out, he would be a good place to start.

Galactic Visions is based off of a general knowledge of most of his songs, but with songs like Circumnavigating the Glob and Sines of Respect in particular.

This was a really nice tune you have here I love the depth of this tune and like how fun it sounds and moves pretty quick too So for the most part this was kind of interesting the quality was better then expected really good work here You have a new fan here and will look for much more of your sound just like you presented here so nice work indeed very fun tune here.

~X~

I was about to review this when I first saw it, but I didn't have my good headphones on, and it was 3 am. And it was (is) a weekday; four hours of sleep ftw...

Ahh, Weird Al Yankovic. I also know him as "White and Nery", "Fat" and "Amish Paradise" guy. Mimicing others is a very good way to learn I think too. Even straight up copying can be helpful from a learning perspective. Basically what I'm saying is, you're right in your description. Over to the song itself.

I think you managed quite well in trying out Ocular's style. I do find many of his tracks to be more enjoyable than this one, but I think the problem is just that he's so good :p But as I said, I think you managed to capture the overall build of many of Ocular Nebulas songs, and stylistically they do indeed seem similar (I still didn't get bored of his tracks. Magic).

If I refrain from comparing this to Ocular Nebula, this is just great! (It's good even if I compare).
I especially like those "instant transitions" at 0:19, 0:38, 048, 1:25 and 1:44. They make you go: "Oh, what happened now!?"

Nice bass, and although I think you could have used slightly more captivating melodies, this is a nice song to listen to (and it doesn't get boring that fast).

Personally, I don't think there was necessarily a reason to use the previous section once more at 1:06, although you switched up the percussion. Still, I could've done with a new exciting lead or melody.

Over all: Very well done. Can't wait to hear more new stuff from you ;)

Oh, I'm off to perform now... Wich me luck :'D

Ps. I liked the ending too :)

SLEEP? SLEEP IS FOR THE WEAK!

I think the reason that this track isn't as enjoyable is probably because of the lack of auxiliary FX that ON uses that I didn't. I don't really think I was going for a high-quality song, I was going for stylistic similarity to ON (not saying his stuff is bad, just saying I'm not that good :D ).

Whenever you hear an 'instant transition', the entire song changes key! Key modulation also features in my favorite song by ON, Circumnavigating the Glob, and I thought it would be an interesting element to implement here, since the song would be extremely boring otherwise.

There was only one notable melody in the song, the one at 0:48, which is sorta how ON does his stuff. However, the background synth is normally more melodic than I had, so I sorta failed on that part. I've never been good at melodies. :P

Thanks for commenting! Good luck on your performance! (On what? Piano? Guitar? Tabla? No one knows...)

PS. I liked the ending of your review too :)

Wow, this does remind me a lot of OcularNebula's stuff! I like the instruments and arps. The mood is cool and cute, and the structure is good too. You give your tracks just the right amount of variation, which makes me jealous. XD My main complaints are that the beat fell flat a bit and failed to add much to the piece, and that it feels very pizzicato-esque, which isn't always a good thing. Also I feel like the balance at :48 was off - that melodic synth seemed way too loud over the arps and bass. In-game, it would even make a pretty good loop. Your pieces are very "reviewable," though, LunacyEcho. They are clearly all very creative and seem to have a purpose larger than themselves, which I like. Keep up the good work! :D

LunacyEcho responds:

If it reminds you of OcularNebula's stuff, then my work here is done. :)

OcularNebula's work often flows a lot better than this song and is more ambient. I agree with the pizzicato thing, but I realized that when I was too far into the song to turn back, Sadly.

I think what makes my pieces reviewable is the fact that I have a purpose with each and every one. Whether it be to create a medley of catchy tunes, an attempt to emulate a certain artist, or even to make a song that uses the 12-bar blues progression through a series of different genres, you can easily say 'yes, it worked', or 'no, it didn't' to each of my pieces. I rarely just make music 'for music's sake', I normally have a purpose behind everything.
