LiquidOoze - Rush Hour (Original Mix)
Made for the NGADM'12, Round 1.

2 days ago I received a message from Step that I had the chance to replace a disqualified participant in the Newgrounds Audio Deathmatch, and hell did I take it. Ever since then I've working on this non-stop.
What you're listening to is a mixture of progressive house and trance, Sander van Doorn style. There are still some flaws in the mixing and the balancing, and the transition aren't perfect, but I'm proud of it, because it was made in a very short time span.

All synths are made with NI Massive.

Enjoy!

Not my usual cup of tea, but it sounds good to me!

What hurt this song was that it was a bit loud. While being enjoyable to listen to, it became repetitive and predictable. But I feel that it's a great song for being made in barely 2 days.

Unce unce unce unce...

I like what you were doing with this, the feel of it just makes me wanna bob my head, and sounds like something you'd hear in a night club with people slipping each other E and having a good time while covered in glow in the dark paint.
First things first, I really like that bass sound, I actually think it sounds like something perfect for a dubstep song, but it seems to fit just fine into this setting, and I loved it's growly angry nature. And I dunno why, but the bassy section starting at 0:44 I really liked, I don't know how to explain it, but I just... liked it...

Stuff I didn't like... Well, first thing was that this was overly loud.. I know it's supposed to be a driving track, but it seems like you really pushed this right to the limit. And that leads me to my next complaint, is that the lead synth was quite harsh... and it was a little painful to listen to, which was only amplified by the overall loudness of the track. It'd be nice if it was smoothed out a little bit so that it wasn't as "biting".
And while I didn't take all that much of a dislike to it for this... I do have to add the repetitiveness as a con, there wasn't really that great a feel of progression throughout.. felt a bit more like a really long loop to me.
And I'm going to go ahead and assume that you were sidechaining, but another issue I had was that this was so pumped up in volume that it felt more like that was the compression kicking in and saying, "It's too loud! She's gonna blow!"... Felt a little unnatural.

So yeah... I actually quite enjoyed this track, even if after listening for a while gave me a headache, before said headache, I quite enjoyed it. 6.5/10

Well, for 2 to 3 days of work, I've got to say I'm impressed! This has a crazily powerful and bassy mix, coupled by some very loud and clear synths and an undeniably catchy melody. It has quite a few problems to address though, but let's start with the good news.

The production is fantastic. I'm not a fan of massive side-chaining but I suppose that it's characteristic of this genre so I won't really annoy you about it. This has plenty of power in the low end and yet it still remains very clear and in-your-face. You should seriously look around to getting your music played in clubs and parties and whatnot, because this is exactly the kind of music that party-hungry fellows would die for. Awesome transitions too (the only transition I didn't really like was the one at 2:27 which was awfully anti-climatic). Like I said above, the melody is darn catchy too, and developed pretty well throughout the track as well (excellent idea adding the melody on chimes at 1:12).

The bad news, however, is that for starters, this is too predictable. It's predictable because of two prime reasons; it's generic and it's repetitive. It has loads of generic properties such as the low saw bass, detuned hypersaw lead and the typical drum beat. The structure also follows most songs of this genre too, which is a bad thing because the generic structure is one of the main things that make this predictable.

Furthermore, the melody is just used too much. I can see why; songs like these are made to be repetitive so that they can really stick the melody in your head (which worked on my end, may I add) but when you're actually listening to this on its own rather than in a club/party, its repetitiveness is painfully obvious. Your track basically comprises of one main melody and then another pattern for a bassline, with a few subtle changes here and there. Sorry to over-simplify it that much but this needs more variety.

All in all, I can tell that you've really got this genre nailed. Just work on that variety and originality, since those are the two main issues with this track.

SCORE:
7/10

Here is your personal review for your round 1 submission! Remember that the score might be a little lower than I would normally give, I'm being a tad harsher than I'd normally be for the NGADM.

The Good:
-First of all, you get a bonus point for finishing this in 2 days. Nice work!
-I like the synths you used for the most part, though they do get a bit harsh throughout the whole song.
-It's definitely well-made... trouce.
-Like the arpeggios in the middle, though I wish they went somewhere, moreso than what they did.

The Not-So-Good:
-Alright, going through the list. I really don't like the sidechain on the kick. It seems a bit excessive.
-The break at 1:42 is a bit awkward, I was really expecting it to fade back in as it faded out.
-The whole song is very, very samey.
-At 2:14-2:28, that highpass break would have been a lot better if it had more to it. Remember, this stuff has been done before - try making it more original!
-Outro could have been done a bit better rather than just letting it ring out.

Overall: Even for just two days, this could have been better. It's very repetitive and a bit harsh on the ears. With the extra point for making this in 2 days... you get a 6/10.

Oakwood responds:

What you don't know is that I didn't strive for an original song, but rather a well-produced one. Coming up with an original melody AND a song to put it in within 2 days is really hard, you know.

You don't like my side-chaining. Well, that's just my style, matter of taste I guess.
I can also understand why you think my break is awkward, but again I guess it is a matter of taste ;P

Thanks a lot for the review man!
