Hey everyone,
This is my "The shoulders of Giants" entry for NGHHC'11. It was inspired by Portishead, one of my favorite groups of all time. With my entry I tried something very different than what I normally do. Since the other battle I entered was a sample battle, I decided that I would go a different route with this one and NOT use any samples (excluding vst samplers like sample tank and soundfonts), just VST's and my midi keyboard.
I ended up using a rhodes organ for the base melody and just built it up. The rhodes organ was inspired by the song "Roads" by Portishead (just look it up in youtube if you haven't heard it!)
The overall tempo is another attribute that I wanted to capture. Portishead does have a few higher tempo tracks, but i just love the slow sexy nature of a track at about 65 bpm.
The idea to use a wah effect, flanger, and strings, also came from the song "Roads"
I threw in some scratches (Which I am terrible at...) because they use scratches pretty frequently.
I love portishead, so this is my flavor on their style.
Enjoy.

Dope
This is a great song. It's very relaxed. I haven't been on Newgrounds for a while because the last time I was listening to the hip hop section, it was sorta weak. I see only 100 votes. Do not a lot of Newgrounders listen to hip hop?
Hiphop on NG is like the red headed stepchild. But the community is growing, thanks in no small part to BigRed and this comp.

I can feel the influence here.
This is really good man, totally reminds me of portishead. The intro was kinda drawn out but 00:43 is not 'too' long for a song kick-off. Really good job!
Thanks for the review!

Spot on.
I love Potrishead, this is a great tribute. It totally captures the vibe. That slow scratch and break is just like... damn, spot on dude.
Thanks, I kind of wish I had mixed down a couple of things, a little better, mainly the keys that make the lead, I wish I had turned them down a bit. Either way I'm still like this one! It definitely turned out pretty good.
Thanks for the review.

Your good
When you have an album, let me know, I'd love to purchased one. You took what portishead did in their first two albums and evolve those ideas.
Thanks xD
I actually have a cd full of older instrumentals coming out really soon.
