This piece was written from February-March '09. It's the first of two movements, the second of which was completed prior to this. It was premiered in May of this year by the professional ensemble-in-residence at UC Davis. The work features a "Pierrot" instrumentation--Violin, Cello, Piano, Flute (doubling on Alto Flute) and Clarinet (doubling on Bass Clarinet).
Essentially, it's my first attempt at writing a serious, stand-alone work, and my most ambitious composition to date. This first movement opens quietly, with a sense of foreboding that casts a grim sort of shadow over what follows. Motives are introduced and developed, reappearing in distorted forms, and provide something to grasp onto in an otherwise murky sonic landscape.
The audio is a bit quiet; it ought to be listened to on headphones or good speakers.
Thanks for reading/listening. Enjoy!
