Art is Resistance

Share

Here's a copy/pasta I did from when I posted it elsewhere

"This one was a painting I did in acrylics, at either the end of the first semester, or beginning of the second semester in Junior year. The assignment was to illustrate some world issue, so I chose the freedom of speech/censorship.

I took a concept that Trent Reznor of the band Nine Inch Nails made for his album, Year Zero. The album was about how in the year 2022 (or what the United States Government called Year Zero) the US gov. pretty much entirely takes control of the lives of it's citizens, via brainwashing, drugs in the water supply, etc. The Gov calls it Year Zero, because it's supposedly the year that the US is "reborn".

In this, some people rebel, and create propaganda saying "Art is Resistance without violence" and whatnot.

Well, I took that, and made a painting with lyrics of some of Trent's songs, and stuff, resisting the government via art. Freedom of speech. My teacher didn't like it since i had a curse word on the painting. And she did what to it? Censored it. It got the point across to the class and everything. It was perfect.

The hand/rip in the flag is another thing taken from Year Zero, called the presence. Google it.

Year Zero is a very good album, buy it, listen to it via youtube, whatever, it's good stuff.

Also, after several months of having it, I realized that the swastika was backwards. I was pissed. "

Anyway, sorry for the off angle, but I'm too lazy, and I don't like it enough to take a correct picture of it. :/
