A mock-up of a gba-esque game. Didn't really add as much as I could have.

ahh.. the gba, reminds me of the time when everyone wanted to play on the gba and its games. so sad that it is forgotten by the nintendo ds and its succsessors

I dont think the background needs any more detail to fit the character at all? I think its balanced out nicely. I give this a 10/10 for creativity amongst the norm of art.

Yeah, I mentioned that I didn't add much detail. I also should have added a hud and an enemy or two as well.

The bottom one is better, because of the contrast and color
may I ask what program you use this make the art? and do you make your own
pixel animations?

Yeah, I make my own animations. I use game maker's built in image editor for all my pixel art, since it's what I've gotten used to.
That reminds me, I should upload some sprites...
