The Bible and The Bottle (Cinco de Mayo)

Share

This was a little something that I started working on on May 5 of this year, which I actually had no recollection of what day it had been that day. Being reminded of the day, I decided to take a simple start to a sketched skull and work diligently towards the idea of the culture of the holiday. Going to First Friday that day and finding beautiful work of the culture painted by an artist named Gabriel, it struck me that I had to make the rest of the piece revolving around that overall theme. I am very apologetic that this is late, but I hope a poem including the story to this piece will make up for that. I have never done anything like this before, so I hope I did alright and didn't wrongly represent anything with this idea. Thank you for the understanding, and I hope you like it!

THE BIBLE AND THE BOTTLE
_________________________

Miguel moved many spirits and so

producing music pertaining to his own personal woe.

Rebecca was moved as well, one night;

as she saw something in him that made her shine bright.

They both played music; Becca before Miguel.

She was just dumbfounded at how he sounded so well!

She later on asked for the man's name, and

Clever and witty he was, Miguel replied with the exact same.

They got along nicely soon after,

Having long talks about all their pain and laughter.

Months and years that brought them close,

lead Miguel to finally propose.

The wedding was sore,

as the groom had been drinking the night before.

Sobbing all their marriage,

Madam Becca watched her husband grow weak and disparaged.

She would pray to god that he'd be alright,

as a cure for his addiction was nowhere in her sight.

White dust and whiskey was all he could think

Having enough, he would always wash down bitterness with a drink.

The undeniable nature of Miseur Miguel's demise

had led him to become less of the man Becca thought once wise.

Sobbing one day, with no weight to hide,

Becca has found she's carrying a child inside.

The fighting stopped, at least.

Father now had to try and defeat one more beast.

A changed man, Miguel would've made.

In later months, that possibility was to slowly fade.

Promising to change and clean out his straw,

his battle with demons was meant to come to a draw.

Happy to be father, fought for what was true

The demons left; but not without him, too.

Cinco de Mayo, Miguel lay cold and sound.

For after that day, he was forever in the ground.

Afraid to know what would come of his last breath,

Miguel had sadly realized what lies in the face of death.

Mournful was mother and unknowing infant.

The possibilities for what would happen then were a guess; infinite.

Struggling to live, eventually making their home;

With her baby, Becca was never truly alone.

Child grew up to be Roberta Sanchez,

A well respected woman in the music business.

Growing up without her father's graceful songs,

Roberta then knew where she truly belongs.

In the eyes of mother, a soldier had fell;

without a chance to finish fighting, or knowing what would've been well.

Throughout life, Roberta instead believed true

that her father was among the stars, and so was mother, too.
