KO-FI | PATREON | COMMISSIONS | SUPPORT NEWGROUNDS

It's the one year anniversary of the NEWGROUNDS Dragonball Z Collab! I've been wanting to share some production art for my contribution for a long time and I think now is as good a time as any. I'll also be uploading the toon on it's own as well.

I studied Computer Animation in college and spent hours on NEWGROUNDS lurking and idolizing some of the most historic animators so it was an immense honor to be a part of this. I knew the work involved but there's nothing like working on a cartoon to truly understand how much of a hellscape it truly is. Here are some lessons I learned.

DON'T DOLL IT UP LIKE A BITCH!

Coming into this as a primarily an illustrator I overworked every single frame of my toon and learned a valuable lesson. Be messy, these aren't stand alone images they're part of a whole and work together to make something magical. Had I realized this sooner I could have been done much quicker with better results.

ANIMATIC OR DIE!

I can not explain how fucking lucky I was that everything fit the way it did when I started compositing the cartoon. Scenes lined up and transitioned, music matched scenes and even complimented some jokes. I got lucky. I did storyboard but having an animatic done can save you the trouble of realizing late in the game that something isn't right.

These are the main things I can remember right now a year later but I'm sure there are more. All in all for my first cartoon I think it turned out OK. The writing was it's weakest area. After talking about it with a few people I see the missed potential more clearly and I'd love to give it another shot one day.

To all you die hard Vegeta fans out there.

This was a great read! As someone trying to get back into this illustrating/animation game after a looooooong time, reading your trials and fears is some positive reinforcement especially coming from someone so talented! Thanks for the insight!
