During the funeral rite of a passed spouse, a holy man will place a spell over the widowed husband or wife. The spell creates what is called a mourning mask, which hovers in front of their face for all to see but them. The mask is a manifestation of their grief and will remain so long as they mourn the death of their loved one. Once they come to terms with the loss, the mask dissipates.
It is not uncommon for officers of the law to attend the mourning mask ceremony when the death was not of natural causes. If the mask dissipates immediately, the widowed individual could become the prime suspect in their investigation.
This is a really nice piece, even with out the good story. Bereavement certainly does feel like a spotlight on ones soul. There's a fair amount of anguish that translates well off the canvas.
I find it odd that I recognize his clothing as Australian military wear... but that only enhances the intrigue. The boot next your signatory mark, looks a bit formless and awkward. I guess the gleam of the upper vest, is okay, if a bit pointed.... still helps accentuate/ frame the face.
Yeah I messed up the boots - I wanted tohave the elements outside of the spotlight less defined, but I don't think it sold too well.
