Reviews for "Endowment"

I like the atmosphere at the beginning. It’s a little slow to progress, and the string sample at :45 was a little inauthentic - the uniform vibrato is a dead giveaway that’s not a real instrument. I like the melodic content in the strings, although the texture is very slow to change during the first couple of minutes of this piece. The string arpeggios at 1:45 could also sound a bit more distinct - I’d suggest being a little stricter with the equalization there. The staccato ambient synth that comes in at 1:56 is really cool. The first true emotional height of the piece is at 2:30, and I find it’s quite enjoyable and energetic. The breakdown at 3:20 was a nice structural touch, although (again) the sample isn’t the best. I also thought it sounded pretty unnatural the way it faded out by 3:40. Personally, 4:28 was probably my favorite part of the piece - I like how it exposes those quirky synths and has a lot of tension, even in the minimalism. That section also made the second climax at around the 5-minute mark feel especially cathartic. The part at 5:21 was a bit of an unexpected progression. Given how long this piece is, I’m not sure that it was necessary. There are a lot of twists and turns during the last minute or so of this piece, and I’m not sure all of them paid off for you. You could’ve used 5:49 as a stop-start transition right at 5:20, without the bizarre interlude in between. Still, that’s a little picky. Overall, this piece is strong. The texture is nice and full, and it has a great sense of atmosphere. Keep at it, Ectisity! :)

Thanks again for the detailed feedback :D.
The part at 5:21 definetley sound forced. I really wanted to have that part in there, but didn't find a natural transition.
Really glad you liked it, and thx for the review :).

Oh gosh I just wrote a long review then lost it. I was saying that I'm stunned by how good this piece is. The way you effortlessly blend two styles that have nothing to do with one another (atmospheric/orchestral into 450bpm-electro-something) is incredible. You're only 19 and you're making stuff like this? I'm amazed you didn't do better in this round of NGADM, but if you don't flat out win it in the next couple of years, I'll actually riot.

EctiBot responds:

Wow, really glad you liked it :D. Good luck in the NGADM!

i really wanna like this one more but the drum mixing and sound selection in the electronic sections is kinda weak and sucks a lot of the life out of the energetic drum composition. there's also a lot of noodling and dead space - i keep losing interest mid way through each of these sections because the sound design isn't really all that exciting and the main themes aren't compelling enough to make up for it

the orchestral parts are really good and are well mixed within themselves (they feel very disconnected from the other sections mix-wise imo), honestly i think you could've produced a much stronger work without the divergence into pendulum worship electronic sections.

the way that snare roll sample cuts out without zero crossing is horrendous though, step it up yo :P

EctiBot responds:

I think I've never agreed with a review as much as I did with this one XD. I was planning on fixing the small issues like sample cuts, coherence throughout the track, but I had to travel and didn't bring my pc. I was originally uploading this to get feedback on what I should improve, but it ended up being my final submission.

wow you raised the bar on yourself like 3 times in this piece.

amazing stuff! WHAT A HOOK!

seriously there's lots to improve in here like the mix and stuff but THAT HOOK IS OFF THE

HOOK

also i love all the foreshadowing of the eventual drop in the slow sections.

dang yea thats all i got. that melody is iNCREDIBLE its gonna be stuck in my head all day.

EctiBot responds:

Thanks, really glad you liked it :D. I'll probably re-make it sometime, as it ended up becoming a rather rushed effort X3

A great piece! You wrote a nice story here and it progresses beautifully. I love the subtle mixing you did on the realistic parts. The electro parts sounded a bit off to my ear in parts though, I think it was some clashing in the lower end and the lead was a little scratchy, but I really enjoyed the changes overall.

Good luck!

EctiBot responds:

Thanks :D. Definetly som clashes in the lower end yea. I'll try to be more careful of that for my next piece :)
